Christmas came early. Thanks 1dave. Love my Sherman tank. Do you remember carbide canons ? This thing would go over like a lead balloon this day and age. ATF would be all over it. These were disappearing from stores about the time I started in elementary school. 1963

Yes a big blast, as the calcium carbide makes straight up acetylene when mixed with water. Acetylene as you well know can blow up about anything. BE SURE TO TURN YOUR ACETYLENE TORCH OFF. Especially if it is in your dwelling. I will not allow myself to have acetylene tanks in my dwelling. Where is Tela's tank ?

Paradox of a flame lit lantern in a coal mind just plain sounds scary. I had a headlamp for caving. Fine little brass lantern and so well made. Those little pea sized chunks of carbide..ran for a long time. Our Daddy's would be the age bracket for owning one of those canon's Bill. Or real old guys like 1dave.

Glad you liked it. I'm well into the season for getting rid of stuff. I shut down my 27 year old plant business. Gave away a whole panel truck full of new nursery pots in boxes. Chemicals. Fertilizers. Greenhouses. Plastic to cover them with. Large piles of lumber set fire to. Burnt up fan motors and other metal equipment picked up by scrap metal guy. Major liquidation. Out with lots of new, in with as little as possible. Nice to purge. Wife is hoarder. When she is out of town I fill the dumpster. she is getting smart to me though. Hoarding curse, grrrr.

I had one of those cannons new in the early 70's. Dad got pissed because I would steel his lighter flints to keep my cannon working! ETA Still available!! www.bigbangcannons.com

On the subject of carbide... I have not done this, way too good with hook and line. I have snagged the remains in salmon streams. A bit of carbide, a little water, a rock for weight and toss it in. Pressure builds to auto ignite, they laughed at the explosion, put down the beer and net the stunned fish. Sorry excuse for hunter/gathers.

Crap, not being on in a while I missed this thread. I think they were called "bangsite" cannons, but I'm not sure. I loved them back in the day. I never had one, but I had friends that did.
For not having those cannons, we made tennis ball cannons when tennis balls came in...well, cans. Great fun back then. Then again, we also used to ride in the back of pickup trucks.
