i gave in to my increasing addiction and ordered a Lortone 6" Trim saw.......gulp!!! they shipped it today and i CAN'T Wait!
as a sign of good faith, my rock order finally came in from Brysons Rock Shop.....(extreme foot tapping there).
so, folks, be prepared to be pummeled with questions now as i have no idea what i am doing....except it's gonna be fun. tee hee.
after i cut them....how do i polsih them? do i need a grinding machine (if so, what do you recommend)? i feel so inept....or do i put then pieces in the tumbler? will probably do that anyway.....
in for a penny in for a pound, KD

Hello KD,
Congratulations of your purchase! You will love cutting rocks. Every time you make a cut, you are seeing something that has never been seen before. You in a sense are discovering a new color, design, pattern with every slice of rock which has never been seen before, except through your eyes.
I do have a quick "Safety Note" for you. If you purchased or if your saw came with a Pro-Slicer Blade, please be cautious. These are extremely sharp blades! Most of your rock blaeds will not cut you and you can hold your finger on it while it is running and nothing will happen, except some lightly abraded skin. These ultra thin and totally embeded diamond blades such as the Pro-Slicer are EXTREMELY SHARP and they can cause severe cuts in a fraction of a second. So please be careful. I am not trying to keep you from purchasing one of these blades, they are great and they save a lot of rough (due to the overall thickness of the blade) but they need to be used with extreme caution. Other than that ... have a great time and enjoy your new saw.
Do you know what you are going to use as a coolant? I have used water with rust inhibitors and oils in my 10" Lortone trim saw. There is a wide variety of coolants to use and it's up to you to decide what you would like to use.
Personally I use baby oil. It's light, provides good lubrication and most of all available at your local grocery store, in the isle with diapers and other baby related materials. One of the biggest reasons I like the baby oil is because it is safe, and it doesn't smell bad either! My wife used to cringe when I used to come in from the rock shop with other oils as they had a very strong petroleum smell, where as baby oil doesn't.
I have used baby oil for better than 15 years and it has never failed to perform for this purpose. I would highly recommend its use.
If there is anything that I can help with, please let me know.
Enjoy,
John

Hey, John, thaks for the tip on the saw blades...i'm not sure what it comes with (it comes with at least one blade, i think), but you can be sure i will be extremely careful. i like all my fingers and skin where it is, thank you.
i did indeed order the RayCool coolant as recommended...i would never use baby oil as i can't stand the smell. i'd rather snort stink bug. ewww.
and i just can't wait to set this up and open those rock secrets....i've really gone totally bonko-nutball here. thanks for your offer of support and help, you will live to regret it!!!! HA!

Congrats, KD! You're gonna have SO much fun with that saw! Let us know what you think about using it, if you have time to post inbetween cutting rocks!
John, I never knew that we could use baby oil in our saws. Llana and I have a 7" saw. How much baby oil should we use? We would still mix it with water, wouldn't we?

I'm so trying to get my husband as wrapped up in this hobby as I am. Mostly so "we" can buy toys , not just me begging. I had a catalog out today saying" What a great price on a rock hammer, and we need a new loupe, and look at these stackable sieves and buckets and..' He said "I need some new knives" He's a chef and his toys are as expensive as mine. I told him he started it, bought my vibe for my birthday. But now I want a saw It may take a while, but the rocks WILL suck him in. He's facenated with gemstones right now so that will be my next batch. Then he will worship the Godess ;D cookie

well, i guess "beading" and jewelry stuff just wasn't enough to get support from the man of the house, once i got into percussive tools it really started to perk some interest (read into that what you may)...now that i am showing interest into "a more manly" hobby, i'm in like Flynn.....i get to buy the boy toys. sharp things and stuff that goes bang......go figure. as the recent Mickey D's adverts say "i'm lovin' it"......
grinder, huh? tell more about what i need and supplies i need, please. birthday coming up, don't want to waste a good excuse.
i will post a pic of the rough i just got from Brysons on the other channel, thanks for all your supposrt,
KD
