Hmmmm.... very curious. It almost looks like an artifact. Seems carved. Other than that, I can't offer anything. Have you done a hardness test? There are a couple stickys in the rock id section that might help.

Could that be some type of carved ceremonial amulet?

Further examination. The circular part looks like a medicine wheel. On top of that are the claws of a bird/animal. One would need to know the history of local tribes to determine exactly what it is. Certain tribes have/had specific symbols that were used in ceremonies.

I agree: looks like an artifact. Google some images of mound builder culture artifacts. It almost looks as if it is a chip off a larger statue with a hand holding the circular object. If there is a historical society or history museum in your area, I would take it there for more info. They did do some stone carvings.

How did you find it in the yard? Do you think it was brought in with gravel or ornamental rocks? If it was "native" to your Aunt's place, there may be more artifacts there. Or, other evidence of ancient cultures. In WI, the State Historical society maintains records of locations of artifacts, known villages of the past, and burial mounds or structures. I grew up on land where the largest tribal battle in the state occurred, so I am very interested in learning more about your find.

Feels more fossil-ly to me than artifact-y. Feels more like a natural process. For one thing, if this part was carved, I would have expected the rest of the rock to have received some kind of treatment, I mean alteration, signs of human tampering. I would definitely picked it up, either way.

Looks more like a type of fossil than an artifact, fossils are not my strong suit but artifacts I have had more experience with.
