Here are some of the larger rocks that I tumbled in my last batch. The green ones are green quartz that I got from, if I remember right Banjocreek. My steps were: 1. 14 days in 60-90 2. 7 day in 200 (I think, not sure container not labeled) 3. 7 days in 500 4. 7 day in 1000 5. 7 days in Tripoli 6. 2 day in Cerium Oxide. These next photos are what I put in the tumbler next. Aventurine Mixed Rose Quartz Plus I have one large round rock that I found that I am going to tumble smooth, so I can attach it to a staff, and some blue stones that I got, unfortunately I didn't scan the blue stone. The other blue stones look just like the blue one in the mixed batch. Tami

I forgot to put one of the other steps, I also ran borax, between the Tripoli and Cerium Oxide.
I aslo tumbled with the green quartz some very tiny stones and about 1/8 of them were hematite and a silver grey stone that really didn't polish, but it looks pretty. The tiny stones are a little small to put on my scanner so I won't be putting a picture of them up. I alos found a few garnets that I missed when I was sperating the rock from Michigan.
The scanner doesn't do the stones justice, they are really shiney. Tami

What can I say, Tami, except you done went and created a fine lookin' batch of stones! ;D
I just love that green adventurine. I just put some in polish today. Several of them had rose/red/purple streaks through them. I can't wait to see them when they come out of polish.

great job tami! i notice you added the tripoli between the 1000 and the polish and that the polish only took 2 days . is the tripoli finer than the 1000? i think someone asked this not too long ago but my brain can't remember the answer ;D. what's that gold/red rough under the unakite? is it petrified wood? whatever it is i like it! kim

Very pretty Tami. I like that piece of malachite in the middle. I've been wanting to get me some but it's so pricey. Anyway, you did a great job!! Otter

Wow, this stuff is pretty. It's enlightening, too! I think green quartz is what I picked up in St. Thomas and have just finished a batch of. Looks a lot like yours. Also the dark reddish ones look like the best of my "backyard rock," it polishes to some of the most beautiful stuff of all.

A little while back someone said that tripoli was like 2100 grit or something like that so I just decided to try putting it between the 1000 grit and the polish and the results were absolutely beautiful there are a few stones that could have with stood a little longer in the polish, but I didn't want to take the chance of over doing the ones that were done. I may put some of the rocks that didn't fully polish in with the next batch polish stage and see if they get any shinier.
Yes Hematite is black with a silvery and sometimes reddish shine to it when it is polished.
As for the stone that is below the unakite I am not sure what it is, I just know I didn't get very far with it when I tried to break it up with the anval, chisel and hammer. It is very hard and all I got were some small pieces that chipped away as I was trying to break it up.

Great job Tami, I have one piece of hematite that just keeps getting smaller, but I want that matalic finish. Maybe Tripoli is the answer. Really pretty outcome . cookie

Thanks, on the hematite depending on what the surface is like when you start it might be a little difficult to get that nice metalic shine. Remember hematite has a high iron content so it can rust.
