its a good question Alison my interpretation from back in the day early 70’s stoners then were called heads guess it was only natural to call a business that specialized in paraphernalia catering to stoners ‘head shops’ in high school heads & jocks didn’t particularly get along …mostly but that different story things change head shops were certainly around in the sixties not sure they were called head shops then, tho I think its seventies thing and head shops were pretty popular to the underground crowd during the me generation glass was always a big deal in head shops Toker2 were the bomb ha ha now these head shops are filled with awesome glass work pipes for much stronger concoctions and much more accessible … I’m sure others will have different perspective…

Can't be much younger than you Never really visited them I guess to know what one was Oh, but I wish that were so. You are fourteen years younger than I. Or, am I fourteen years older than you? Lol. I remember back in the mid-seventies going to a head shop in Ocean Beach (San Diego) called The Black. Don't even know if it still exists? Anyway, I didn't go there to shop for what the heads were looking for. Oh no, they had other way cool stuff, freaky far out stuff In there. Do you remember lava lamps? You could get those there. They sold posters, black lights, tie-dyed shirts and other groovy threads. Hemp sandals, incense, hand made jewelry and knick-knacks. Some off the wall stuff you wouldn't find at any conventional stores. They had your drug paraphernalia, if that's what you wanted. I just liked it because it was something different.

I can't recall if we had one of those shops in my town when I was growing up. I'm sure they did but I didn't know about it. I'll have to ask my brothers. They will know. Now you can find all that stuff in Hot Topic and other retail stores. Personally I visit the shops that cater to the metaphysical (if thats the correct term) world. They have paraphernalia there as well, but I go for the sage, clothing, Crystal's, jewelry and other cool stuff.

Lots of shops here. The "younger folks", call them Hippie shops and love them. Divided into two categories, Smoke Shops and ones that feature clothing, shoes, fabric, jewelry, rocks/oils/books/decor/spiritual items/music, etc.
Some vintage items, some new.
While selling jewelry at an event last year, I was wearing a beautiful, long, gauze and embroidered dress from India that I had traded another vendor jewelry for. Lots of positive comments about my "Hippie Dress". I showed the vendor I was wearing the dress and letting others who admired it know where to find him. Many people who browsed our space asked if the rocks I had were new or used. Some people might have laughed at that comment, but I took it very seriously and had prepared. Based on the customers who asked the question, they were wondering if the rocks had been previously used for healing or support reasons. If they had, the rocks needed to be cleansed prior to using again. This may sound strange to many, but I had cleansed the rocks prior to setting them out. They were placed under a full moon. After that, they were cleansed via a sage and sweet grass ceremony. Lastly, after being packed for transport, some citrine clusters accompanied them and were a part of my display.
Back on topic. I have started making the coral and turquoise ear plugs for my customer. It will be a long process, as I am doing it by hand. No power tools used. He loved the idea, since his Grandma was Navajo. Did you know that ear plugs are sold by size? My customer needs 4 mm, as his holes are not that large. According to what he told me, this means he needs the largest portion of the plug to be 4 mm in size. Then graduate down at the center to be about 2.5 to 3 mm.
I checked out the link and these are from a lot of interesting materials. Most appear to be pretty big.

It's part of my spiritual practice There is a big demand for those items Even the plugs for some people need to be "new" Reiki is getting more common as is healing centers

Thanks all for adding further insight
The metaphyxcsical shop I got lots of great slabs from was called Phoenix Rising
yesterday I was identifying the rock of the stone plugs w/ the proprietor. I couldn’t recall the name of the lavender hued rock All I could remember was that it had lithium type properties
Without looking it up can some tell me what type rock that was?
