Hello everyone, I was asked to put up a couple of photo's of the fishing lures that I make out of rock ... so here you go. I have been making these for over a year now and they are definitely different. I have seen lures made from wood, plastic, metal, shoe-strings, bottle tops and bone ... but I have never seen one made from rock! After cutting cabs for 24+ years ... I was looking for something original and different ... well these fit the bill in both respects. This material is Oolite, it is a Poppy Jasper from Southeastern Kansas. This is Dendritic Opal from North Central Kansas. And this is just a piece of Petrified Wood (limb section) - I call it my "stick lure". The wood grain has been beautifully preserved in this piece. You can see the tiny little knots and the layers of wood extremely well. It came from Southcentral Wyoming. Each piece is cut and finished by hand. From rough to finished lure is approximately 3 hours. Drilling the 1.5mm (for the eyes and the eyes with hooks) holes is the most tedious part. I have made them out of Turquoise, various Agates, Petrified Wood, Dendritic Opal, Picture Jasper and Rutilated Quartz. I like to think outside of the box and go for what just doesn't seem possible ... I love this hobby! Enjoy, John

I think there is some excellent artistry here that makes some of these lures very nice collector pieces.
Given the amount of time and skill needed to produce one of these lures, I presume they are rather expensive so will be used by most people as display items and not really for fishing. So whether they catch fish or not is irrelevant IMO, just so long as they look like they could catch fish.
In that regard, I really like the first two lures, as they look like good fish lures, and would make great conversation pieces. Personally, I would avoid the "stick" lure, since it is such a wonderful piece of petrified wood that could be used to great advantage elsewhere, but I don't think it really makes it as a fishing lure.

Do they catch fish ... I do not know.
I have not personally tried to catch anything with them, they were made as collector's pieces and not as an actual fishing lure.
There is all kinds of research that goes into the making of a fishing lure. There was not a lot of research on these ... I just wanted to know if I could make of from rock ... so I did.
There is a gentleman in Wisconsin that bought a couple of these from me (one to keep as a collector's piece and one to use for fishing) and he says that he tries the smaller one out every time he goes out fishing ... but to the best of my knowledge ... he has not caught anything on it. I asked him to let me know if he ever did, and I have not heard, so ? He did claim that he has had Walleye follow the lure in ... but they just didn't want to bite! Probably a good thing .. then they would need to go to the fish dentist for repairs (if they got away).
Thanks for the compliments!
Enjoy,
John

i'm not a collector of anything so what do the fishing lure collector's do with them - display them in a case of some kind - attach them to their hat - what? i use to work with a girl that sat on one of those treble hooks and had to take a trip to the emergency room to get it removed. that doc says he's still catching fish on that one ;D.

John,
Very nice! I bet they would catch a few fisherman if nothing else. Some fisherman will buy anything if packaged in a pretty enough package!
Based on the time and effort, I would be afraid to fish with them. I lose so much gear fishing, I would probably be a millionare if I saved the money I spent on fishing (and rocks)!

Hello again,
Kim - I'm not exactly sure what they do with them ... I would think that they use them for display purposes. My Uncle has one in a Trophy Brown Trout that he caught. He just put the hook in the stuffed fishes mouth and he lets it dangle there. It really does look good though!
KD - I love to use a fly rod when I go fishing. When I was learning how to properly use the 9' rod I was getting to the point where I could really get the fly out there and was soooo proud of my accomplishment - I took a trip back into the mountains of Colorado and made a day of fishing small streams for Brookie Trout. I was HUMBLED ... when the dry fly I was using came back on a power cast and not only pierced my ear but ripped it all the way through my earlobe - roughly 3/8 of an inch! It was bleeding so bad that I decided to head back to the truck (about a mile and a half away) nothing to stop the bleeding really and when I got back to the truck, one of the other people in the camp had thought I was mauled by a bear ... I had so much blood on my shoulder, chest and back. To tell you the truch ... I think I would have been better off being mauled! I can't figure out why people pierce their _______ that (&^%$# hurts!
Cal - I would hate to even think of the money that I have spent on my love of rocks & equipment! But like they say ... The bigger the boys ... the bigger the toys! If that doesn't nail it ... I don't know what will!
Don - Thanks for the words of encouragement. I used to play in the box ... until the cat kept trying to cover me up ;D.
Enjoy,
John

John, You didn't turn the hook in the ear into a fish story, how you fought off the bear with guts and your fly rod! And, how you sent the bear scurrying back into the bushes fearing for its life.
If I had one of John's lures, It would be hanging off of the monitor at work as a conversation piece. I bring in my polished rocks and slabs and leave them around the office, so when someone stops by, we end up chit chatting about rocks, fishing, etc.
I work with numbers and trying to explain numbers to people like sales people and marketing folks, you can see their eyes rolling around! Talking about rocks and fishing is soooo much more fun.
It seems that everyone has had tumbler in the past, or knew someone who tumbles or tumbled rocks!

most fishing lures are designed to catch fishermen not fish, at least that is the way most of the ones in my tackle box are

Those are really cool John. And your probably right about the fish needing to see the dentist if he did hit on it. But hey what's a walleye with a few less teeth. I'll bet if you made one in a bright colored stone and carved it like a crawdad there would be some stupid carp or catfish around here that would hit on it! FYI, most people that collect lures place them in a glass fronted case. Kinda like a butterfly collection.
