Hello all -
Just signed up to the forum, and just getting started in faceting.
I was lucky enough to land a spot in a local class, so hopefully I'll finish my first project next week. I am hopefully going to get an Ultratec V2 from a friend who is retiring from the hobby.
I have ordered a few pieces of synthetic rough to work with, but getting good rough material seems to be one of the harder parts. Are there some good sources? Any recommended gem shows? I seem to remember reading there wasn't much rough available to the hobbyist at the last Tuscon show, but I could be wrong.
I also need to decide where to order laps from, because I think I will start with some new ones.
Let the fun begin!
S.

Welcome from Northern California S. I do not do lap/faceting, but there are probably a good number of other Members who do, and will help you out.
... looking forward to your inputs!

Welcome from Australia.
I facet and taught faceting a while back so any questions fire away.
It would be a good idea to fill out your profile so we know whereabouts in the world you are, (Texas?) most likely there's someone here not far away that can give you some help sourcing rough.
The best way to source rough is to get out in the wild and find it yourself. Loads of fun.

Definitely start with new laps! I've seen people trying to save a buck, buying a dozen old laps, and they work so poorly that no more than two stones are ever cut. Ask cutters in your area what they use and where they buy.
Just about any show in your area will have some sort of facet rough. Tucson will have more than you could take home in a truck. Start with cheap stuff, the quartzes (polish on a Greenway!), colorless topaz, smallish aqua, stuff that's super easy to polish. Ask your fellow cutters, I guarantee they've got extra, most of us go a little nuts, buying parcels and hoarding way more grams than we'll ever cut. With the internet, it's never been easier to buy rough... but fact remains that it's actually really hard to buy QUALITY rough.
