Well we will never know what the final outcome of my hubby's first faceting attempt would have been. In his rush to finish polishing the final facet on the pavilion, he managed to knock the stone off the dop. Of course there is no lining it back up so he's done with it. Personally I thought he was doing a bang up job too. He was heartbroken. But not defeated. He has started one of the tears. Here are the pics of the marble he didn't get to finish. Otter

Don't be discouraged. I knocked mine off too. I lined it up as best I could with some tips from Doc and Donwrob. Sure it wasn't perfect but thats why they call it practice. Besides no one else is going to be using a 10x or 20x loupe to look at it. I think you saw the pics of mine. If I hadn't told you would you have known? I'd try to salvage it! But I know it is a heartbreaker.

AWWWW , don't give up on that piece, it is turning out great! Your husband will be surprized at how easy it is to get it back on and centered up using the transfer jig and holding the pavillion end with a coned out dop stick. It will pretty much center its self, there is hope. What does he have to lose? Keep at it, I've had several come off during faceting, it is just part of the game. Great job so far, & good luck on the re-dop. Talk to you later, Don

It looks great so far. It could be set with the table round, just polish with Zam and it will shine. The girdle would be a little thick however fire should show thru the top. The other alternative is to redop the stone on the culette and just facet down untill you get a plane on the culette facets. Then the stone can be dopped, and redopped to match up the planes. You could also calculate the facet offset and just forge ahead. Dropping a stone is common to a faceter. Re-alignment is a skill unto its own. I have my own tricks, and others have theirs. I did an emerald once that was off on the vertical. I miss calculated the stability of the stone at the girdle and had to re-angle the stone in the dop. That is way more complicated than just being off angle. Really looks goo. Tell him to not lose faith he is just joining the rest of us.
