Hi everyone, I just finished a piece of Rutilated Smokey Quartz and I thought you might enjoy seeing the cab, so here it is: I believe my wife has already put this in her jewelry box! It's more of a treasure chest than a jewelry box, but, you did not hear that from me. Enjoy, John

That is beautiful John. Was that destined to be a guitar pick, before the wife set her eyes on it? I must say that is a terrific stone you are pulling those off of. Do you polish those by hand with Cerium? Thanks for the post!!

John, that is absolutely incredible! Can't say I blame your w!fe for snatching it up! Is she going to have a piece of jewelry made with it? She better! It's too pretty to just sit in a treasure box. It needs to be shown off.

Hi everyone, Again, thanks for the comments they have made my day . Banjocreek - No guitar pick here, it was designed that way. There is a small area of Pyrite at the very top of the cab. The Rutile Crystals are all shooting down from the very top through the bottom. It has an absolutely gorgeous face up. The photo's don'e do this piece justice at all. As far as polish, I am using an Optical Grade Cerium Oxide with a pinch of Linde A. The Linde A is a .3 micron polish with a hardness of 9 on the mohs scale, so, it helps remove small scratches and leaves a perfectly smooth surface. Most of my cabs can be magnified 15 to 20 times with hardly a scratch that can be seen. So, to the un-aided eye, it spectacular! KD, Llana and Cookie - Oh believe me, this stone will not be in the jewelry box for long! When I get a bunch of cabs done, I have my wife pick out her favorite (NOT FAVORITES ;D). Then I will either have the piece wire wrapped or set in a custom setting of sterling silver or 14K. That's why I love this hobby - It keeps me out of trouble and my wife in jewelry! It's a win/win . All I need to do now is learn how to wire wrap and I'll be set! Actually, I think I'll stick with cutting stones! Wire wrapping stones is an art in itself and I'll leave it to someone else that does a much better job than myself! I tried to wire wrap a rock once about a year ago, it looks like a third graders art project - Yup, I'll leave it to the artisans that do it on a daily basis! Enjoy, John

beautiful! with that much talent i have no doubt you could master the wire-wrapping but i don't know when you'd have time with all these cabs and picks!
great job on this one and the other ones you posted.

Gosh I love rutilated quartz. Where did you get your rough? Did you have to pay a fortune for a piece with rutile like that in it?
