These pics go along with the amethyst photos I posted a few days back, 'cause the stuff came from the same load. I actually started with as much petrified wood as amethyst, but this is just p. wood that I find in river gravels and much of it is very brittle or has soft spots that are difficult to polish. So by the time I had enough stuff for 120/220 and beyond, not a lot of it was p. wood. Not great colours in this p. wood, but often the bands show up very nicely...I'm not sure if these are old tree rings or just layers of agate that laid down as the wood was petrified, but I like them anyway. Same recipe as for the amethyst. This is the "class photo": This is moving in a bit closer. Here's a close up of the big piece. This stone is rather large for tumbling I guess, but I thought the banding would show up much better by leaving this stone whole instead of smashing it up. This is the other side of the big piece. In the highlight area on the left side of the stone, I am making a peace sign with my hand. You can see the distorted shadows of my two upheld fingers rise up almost all the way through the highlight area. And this is just a shot of one piece that had some unusual red band run across the stone, that I kinda like. Thanks for looking.

Wow Rollingstone , you have done an excellent job on this great looking petwood. Once the warmer weather comes along I hope to go to a beach behind the aluminium smelter. I've heard that there is a lot of good stuff there.
Hope to see some more of your work soon

WOW that stuff is great!! Wonder if I could find any pet wood around here? Do you mostly have to look in rivers to find it? Great job!!!

Breathtaking shine. Great job! I just started a load of flint and needed aout 1/4 llb to make it full, so I threw in some pet wood. I can hardly wait! COOKIE OOPS, CAP LOCK

I hope this isn't a double post. The abyss swallowed my first attempt right in the middle. Those are very, very pretty, and I'm really impressed with the amazing shine, since I've had a lot of experience with that "soft spot" thing going on with my back yard rock. It's so hard to get a perfect surface on them like you did. I've got a lot of stuff that resembles that (the rock, not the incomparable shine!) and I am always wondering whether it might be pet wood, but I don't know for sure. Some that I've seen around doesn't look like wood to me at all. If you didn't look at the "Shawn's Forest" post I put up last night, check it out -- he has the most incredible pet wood I ever saw. Even a dummy like me could figure out what it is!

Thanks everyone for the comments!
Rosebud -- I don't think petrified wood is found in Minnesota. I just look in river gravels 'cause that's where it's easy to find a lot of exposed rocks.
Puppie -- I don't know if there is any kind of criteria that you can use to positively identify petrified wood. Now that you are on photobucket, you should post some pics of what you have, and let people vote on whether it is or it isn't. And yes, Shawns forest is right out of this world.
Rocky -- I like your interpretations, had to go back and look for them, very obvious once you pointed them out for me. However, you forgot the alien face in the top-centre of the big rock in the very first photo...or is it a guy wearing sunglasses?...now you've got me doing it!

i see the guy with sunglasses - very clearly! the peace sign you did is too cool. could be a very long eared rabbit. reminds me of making animals on the wall with a flashlight at night when we were suppose to be sleeping.
