My neighbor brought her Great Nieces over today. The 4 year old, Zoie, was in awe of all the rocks on my patio. She spent over an hour selecting specific ones that appealed to her and bringing them to me for ID. Her older sister, Piper, had brought along some rocks she had found at her Aunt's for iD. I showed them some fossils and fossil ocean bottom ripples.
They will both be back again to their Aunt's many times this summer. Want me to help them find rocks along the driveway. The area is loaded with fossils, volcanic material, Rhodonite, Agates and many other rocks that they would find interesting.
They both also enjoyed having their hands licked my my new tenants (steer and dairy show cattle), giving treats to my horses and seeing the many unique plants I had.
I love explaining the variety of rocks in this area to children. Never thought a 4 year old could have an attention span that long for rocks. I had to laugh, as she was getting in car to go back, she picked up a rock in the driveway. Asked me what it was. She found a nice, 2" piece of coral! I asked her what she thought it was. Her Aunt told her to remember what I had showed her. Zoie replied that it looked like coral to her! It was a Chrinoid encased in a host rock. Told her to keep it. I was very impressed.
Encourage the children. Teach them. Help them learn.

My wife likes to give away my cabs. She let her sister choose and assortment. They were on display with other objects at her house. Her young granddaughter kept on taking the cabs. Ground rules needed to be established.
