Faceting is fun stuff, mostly. Some days I’m on top of a mountain and others I’m in a trench trying to figure a way to climb out. I really enjoy the look of simple designs with basic angles and have collected a few from the net. The majority are for quartz with an R.I. of 1.54. I’ve acquired some materials that have an R.I. range of 1.61 to 1.64. Without having faceting software, which seems to prefer Microsoft code, I’m deep in the pit today. Is there a way to adequately alter the critical angles of quartz patterns for different R.I. without a degree in advanced mathematics?

I know a few people here in Australia that have scrounged an old laptop or desktop PC running Windows XL for the sole purpose of putting Gemcad win on it. There are lots of great designs on the net but they are .gem file format and require Gemcad to open them, it's worth having. The critical angle for Quartz patterns 42 degrees is the minimum, you can often cut higher RI material without changing anything and get a good result. Have a look at www.gemologyproject.com/wiki/index.php?title=Faceting_Designsfor some fantastic designs, I have cut a few by Ariel Akhavan and they are stunners. he usually says what range of RIs the design is suitable for.

Gemcad will run on windows 7 I don't know about windows 10. Gemray, which you really need if you are going to try changing angles is, as far as I know only applicable to windows XP or earlier. Hence the reason for scrounging an ancient PC.
It's a bit of a steep learning curve but Robert Strickland has video tutorials and there's a hard copy manual available for download.

'Pauls' and 'QuailRiver', THANK YOU. I'll be monitoring Craig's for a Windows machine. In the interim, using that Tangent Ratio Converter with the RI and CA reference numbers at www.gemcutter.com/angles.htm should keep me cutting. This is a great forum.

A Windows Xp machine is basically junk these days, don't pay very much for it. Ask around, I bet someone has one taking up space in their garage that they'd be happy to get rid of.

I run GemCAD on a macbook using the CrossOver app. It's like $30-$40 bucks, but cheaper than a new machine.
