That's cool! I wonder how expensive his light is. I guess I'll have to read the article. Thanks for sharing it.

From what I could tell after reading a bunch of stuff on the Yooperlites Facebook page they are just using $20 365NM UV flashlights. He is doing guided group tours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. He charges $50 and lets you use a light and you get to keep all the rocks you find. It looks like his tours have all been sold out. I just checked and it is on all of the Detroit area news sites and it looks like it has hit most news sites across upper Michigan too. I am not a big fluorescent rock collector but I do have a couple dozen specimens and a plug in lapidary U.V. light. When I have all of my mixed rock tumbles out for rock shows I run the U.V. light across them just to see if any Fluoresce. Chuck

Wow! The State lets you keep collected rocks at a state park? That is special.

Wow! The State lets you keep collected rocks at a state park? That is special. State parks and state land are OK for collecting here but there is a 25 pound person per year rule. The national parks are off limits for collecting and are enforced. Since this guy has is selling these new finds by the pound I wonder if that would raise any eyebrows to that 25 pound rule. The 25 pound rule is rarely enforced but having several news sites tell the story about the rocks you are selling might not be a good thing. The only story here in Michigan about someone getting in trouble over collecting rocks all happened because he bragged about his large Petoskey stone on social media. Chuck

He charges $30 plus shipping, but I can find similar lights on Amazon for cheaper. They're not exactly 365 nm, but close. I want to buy one and use it on the beaches here. The guy in the rock shop near Midland told me that petoskey stones fluoresce. That's the only time I've ever heard that, but he does collect them, so maybe.

I have never heard that but petoskey's do not glow under my raytech UV light. I do not know how the cheap UV flashlights work compared to the old school plug in lapidary models. The Lapidary ones were had two settings. Long wave and short wave. Some had both and some just had one or the other. Mine is a single but I do not remember if it is the long or short version. The lapidary versions were about $300 for singles and over $500 for the dual's back in the day. I had to really dig through a bunch of Facebook posts to find a spot that he said 365NM and in the thread he said 385NM would not work. There was also some talk about different NM ratings making things look different colors. Like under one light the rock looked yellow but under another orange. www.ebay.com/itm/UV-Flashlight-Black-Light-1-LED-365NM-Handheld-Led-Ultraviolet-Blacklight/113206849798?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649Chuck

I just ordered the one Chuck linked to, but it was a little cheaper on Amazon. If it works, I might upgrade to Dave’s recommendation. Thanks for the help.

The more expensive ones are certainly more powerful. For beach combing I would probably tape that cheaper flashlight one to a stick to avoid bending over. Even then you may only get a one square foot area lit up VS holding a more powerful one up higher to see a larger area. Chuck
