I wonder if they are going to be fair and give the farmer something even though he gave it away? Although the estimated value sounds over-estimated. That comes out to around $100 per gram. Pretty high for most iron meteorites. Most sell for $1-5 per gram. Being a US fall will bring the value up a little.
There are various stories like this including meteorites being used for doorstops, to prop a mailbox post, in stone walls, etc. My favorite was the iron meteorite being used as a dog's water bowl in Mexico. A famous meteorite researcher traded a pick up truck for it.
