Stumbled into a rock shop today. I typically don't buy much rock but this (way too expensive) chunk really called to me. About 4.5 lbs, looks like those bands go all the way through.

Wonderstone? Looks great. Would be a perfect piece to face polish!

Wonderstone? Looks great. Would be a perfect piece to face polish! It was in a bin with a bunch of central Oregon picture jasper, but was very different from anything else in the bin (and totally unlike anything else they have.) It has the texture of picture jasper I'm familiar with and I've seen lines like that in jasper from that area, just never that densely concentrated.

That reminded me of some stuff I tried to tumble years ago. I was not happy with the finish so I set it aside. I like the patterns so I have kept it. I just took a a couple pictures to compare. A finished piece. At an angle micro pits show up. Looking straight at the rock it is not as noticeable. Hopefully yours is more workable. The patterns are great. Chuck

Oh yeah, now that I look again past the beautiful pattern I see the rind on it looks like some picture jasper I have.

And yeah, it's clear there's the potential for pits. I also think the heavily banded stuff isn't as hard as the stuff with a lot of blue in it? Anyway, this will be down the road a bit but the plan is to slab it once I get my larger saw built (which has slipped to #4 on my project list!) Argh

Argh It is probably much better suited for slabbing and cabbing. Chuck

Looks like either Disaster Peak or Palomino picture Jasper. Larry C. Good call. That was driving me crazy and I knew "disaster" was in the name back when I bought mine. Chuck
