I'm curious to see what type of magazine (that portains to this hobby ) you guys and gals subscribe to. Also, what catalogs you get that you find very useful. I have subscribed to Lapidary Journal and Rocks and Gems. My favorite catalog is from Rio Grande. They have alot of things you can buy for cabochons. If you have seen my pics of some of the things I have made they come from there. I also find them the cheapest to buy findings. Like to hear from you guys. I like to know a good rock catalog or magazine.

Hello Brett,
Personally, I enjoy the Rock & Gem magazine. They have more of what I am looking for and like to read about. The where's, how's, why's, who's ... you know ;D.
Enjoy,
John

i subscribe to Lapidary Journal, but have found it a bit strong on adverts and weak in real content. i, too, have been casting around looking for a better rock mag. i just got the Kingsley North catalog and the Lortone catalog and i buy all my beads, string, findings, chain and stuff from Fire Mountain Gems. Fire Mountain has a great paper catalog and on-line catalog too. they ship extremely responsively as well.
i might try the Rock and Gems, KD

You might want to get you a Rio Grande catalog. It is about 2 inches thick and I have compare there prices with Fire Mountain and Rio is cheaper.

I have looked at both Rock and Gem; and, Lapidary Journal found at the local lapidary shop. I decided to subscribe to Rock and Gem. R&G has more articles on where to go, articles about rocks, etc.

I used to get both R & G and L J but I dropped the L J because I couldn't relate to their articles. They seemed to be more for the pro's rather then the hobbiest. I get catalogs from Rio Grande,Kingsleynorth,Diamond Pacific,Graves,Fire Mountain Gems,Eloxite and a bunch more I can't remember right now. The thing is that I don't look at them much because they're all on the web and it's easier to go back and forth to compair prices on the web. Example: I was thinking about bidding on a Lortone tumbler on Ebay which has three 1-1/2 lb barrels(can't remember the model number). The bid was up to $68.00.I did my usual Google search for a new tumbler and found a price range from $79.00 to $115.00. Why buy the used one? I bought the tumbler for $79.00 + shipping and handling at Eloxite and am very happy with it. I don't think you can always get the best price on an assortment of items form and one Ebay dealer, catalog or web site. You have to shop around and get the price, shipping + handling, total it up and then deside who you're going to give your money to. I guess it's kinda like trying to find one radio station that plays all your favorite songs!!!!! Of course as usual,,,,,,,,,,,,,, That's only MY opinion,,,, Tom

I get the rio grande, firemountain and kinsley north catalogues. I keep em on my bedside table and my husband calls it my rock porn. But it's not true! I keep them for the ARTICLES! (That's my story and I'm sticking to it).

That's too funny ... Rock Porn ... I'll have to remember that one ;D. When I was in high school (1980) I used to put a Rock & Gem magazine cover on an adult magazine - the teacher thought I really liked the rocks, as I was always showing them to the other kids in the class He never did ask to see any of the rocks ... thank GOD! Does that count? Enjoy, John

Rock porn - too funny!
I don't subscribe to any magazines. I do have stack of old R&G mags I got at the rock show for 10 cents each. They are not current, but are new to me. Lots of neat stuff in them.
My rock porn is on a table next to my recliner, so I can recline and enjoy my porn. LOL!

Lapidary Journal condenses their articles and on occasion publishes books. I have one on gem cutting and stone working, and one on jewelery skills. These are dated from the '60s and really have some great tricks not used anymore. They have pulled me out of a mess more than once. I find a lot of these books in used bookstores but one has to search. I have found when I put the old to the new it makes a difference and gives a great deal of flexibility. Blech! Four more posts and I am doomed. I think I am going to post as a guest. I will make everyone guess who I am. Yes! Thats what I will do. I will read my Rock Porn, post as a guest, get bloodshot eyes, buck teeth, bulging veins. I can schlip and schlide and touch all the bananas. Its alive! Its alive! Its alive!

My favourite is the standart Colt with bumpers, flaired feed entry. This in a steel Combat Commander with extended, throated, bushed, match bbl with extended sight relief is the perfect combination. Throated, it can take HP., RN., ball, and throated, can be loaded hot without the ejector blowing out on the case. I had one that would print 1" at 50' on a rest. You and I think alike.

okay I read these last two posts about 29 times...went away...thought about it...came back...read them another 19 times...had a piece of toast, fed the cats and had a shower...mid way throught the conditioner rinse it hit me....MAGAZINES! okay I get it. very funny too. I guess Canadians don't get gun humor. On the other hand when someone starts a "what's your favorite moose" thread, I'm SO there!

OK , I will spill the beans
Doc and I are talking about Gun or specifically pistol "Magazines", most uninformed or poorly trained people call them (Incorectly) "Clips". Few firearms use actual 'Clips" those that come to mind are 93 , 95 , 98 Mausers , 95 Styer , 03 Springfields , and the grandaddy of all true clips is the Garand. The rest of modern firearms use detachable box type magazines (1911s, Glocks,Berettas etc.)
