A friend of mine sent this, I think it's Hematite. Just wondering if anyone has done anything with it and has any advice. Thanks. Yeah I'm a bit bored at work today. Thinking about going home, firing up the heaters in the garage and doing some rock stuff. Not a bad way to spend the day and ride out the blizzard, right? They just closed all of the highways in the Panhandle of Nebraska. Wheeeee.

If Hematite, could be polished with Dremel. Would be messy. Does a magnet stick to it?

I agree, it will be messy. Could also be goethite. IIRC, streak for hematite is red to red-brown, streak for goethite is yellow to yellow brown.

A streak test can confirm if it is hematite. You can use the underside of the toilet tank since it is unglazed porcelain. If it streaks red then hematite. A black or gray streak and magnetic would be magnetite. I have cabbed specular hematite. DSC_0740 by James Sloane, on Flickr

Agree with streak test. Perlite also looks like that in the black version.

It was a blackish grey streak, not magnetic that I can tell I like the underside of the toilet tank idea, by the way!

Kinda looks like coal to me. Must be the picture, definitely not coal. It's super heavy.
