There's always been an oversupply of diamonds. That's why Cecil Rhodes' Diamond Trading Company (DTC) was formed in the early 20th Century: To ration given diamond qualities to maintain prices.
The game's gotten a lot more complex since Synthetic, Australian, Russian and Canadian diamonds hit the market. The Russians are a huge force in the diamond trade these days while DeBeers is slowly morphing into a mostly retail company.
Another big hit for the diamond trade has been the emerging public taste for colored gems as engagement rings, as well as the loss of popularity of engagement rings among Millennials.
