Can I use an electric sander to polish obsidian?

I know that I can cut obsidian but with the cracks in the obsidian that I have, I'm worried that it will get complexly ruined.

This obsidian was given to me by my late grandfather and I have no way to replace it. I just want to get it looking nice for display purposes.

I included a picture of the polished side and the non polished side - sorry for the photo quality, I took this late at night.
