Hi all, I'm a newbie This is a great site, I'm so happy I found it! I have always wanted to get into the lapidary art/science, but somehow, never found the time to get around to it. But now, as I find my self unemployed, i got the time to dive head first into it. Duel tumbler on the way from ebay, got my first batch ready to to tumble (rose quartz), got my newbie books ^^. reading all I can find online. Learned alot from you guys here, thanks . But even before my tumbler has arrived, I have come across my first problem. I have been looking on line for supplies, girts, pellets, and what not. And although I have found some pretty good deals, the shipping cost for the stuff is sometimes 2-3x the price of the product. I fear now that I finally have the time for it, I don't have the money. I was wondering if anyone one the board knows of a place near north-eastern Illinois, Chicagoland area (I am in palatine) where I can go to buy supplies, and so save the shipping cost? I can't seem to hunt anyplace down. Thanks for all the great info here.

Hi, sorry I don't know the Chicago area at all, but I did a google search and I pick up that "The Gem Shop Inc" is in Cedarsburg WI, which their ad says is 100 miles north of Chicago...bit far, but if you are in the area sometime.... You can find all their products listed on the net, but I have never dealt with them so I can't make any recommendations for or against them.
Closer to Chicago...I can't believe that there are no rock shops in Chicago.... I would have thought there would be something under lapidary in the yellow pages, but if it's not there, then have you tried calling up hobby shops or science stores? They might not have rough rock to tumble, but might have grit and pellets. Maybe someone else can be of more help?, hope so.

You should be able to find plastic pellets in a craft store. There are a lot of "rock shops" that are in peoples homes and garages they just take a little longer to find

If you have a fairly well-stocked hobby shop in your area, call and ask if they sell tumblers and supplies. Long ago, that's where I found my supplies.

Here is a list of all the rock shops in Illinois

I don't know a thing about Illinois, but one of these shops might be closer to you than Chicago.
I know what you mean about shipping costs! I ordered a box of rocks - 30 lbs. and the shipping was $8.00 more than the rocks!

Thanks for all your help guys. From the above list, I was able to find 2 shops in the chicagoland area that were still open, and carried supplies. : Jeris Rock Shop and Daves Down to Earth Rock Shop The woman at Jeri's confirmed the lack of rock shops around chicago. She told me most of the rock hounds around chicago were old timers that have passed on, or fadded out of the bussiness ; and younger people aren't interested anymore, apparently people just want to buy beads for jewelry making. Hwm~ I guess people around chicago are getting too busy to tumble. Sad. Jari's seems to have really resonable prices, and the woman there seemed very kind and to know a thing or two. Daves has a free rock and fossil museum there, so at least the one's left seem pretty good. Thanks again for your help, Evelyn
