This is the first small test batch of some of the obsidian I collected in Utah last spring with the help of zarguy. He got me out to a beautiful location with lots of tumbling-sized material in black, snowflake and mahogany. I didn't repair any of these along the way and just ran them straight through the tumbling process. Except for a few chips here and there I think they came out pretty good.

Nice job! I love collecting obsidian when I'm in Utah (I typically spend most of July there). Tumbling it is always tricky though. Keep up the excellent work. JP

I was looking at the tumbled stones earlier and noticed something I've not seen before. Is this gold sheen obsidian? I remember zarguy trying to explain what it looked like and that he had found some in the area but not having seen it before I had difficulty picturing what he was describing.

There are different types of Gold Sheen, but I agree with Robin: Yep.

Another rock showing a different effect. Still gold sheen? This one does not look like gold sheen to me. There is also a silver sheen, but I'm not seeing sheen in this. Hard to tell from a picture though.

Awesome tumbles.... Did you use a rotary or a Vibe? You can get many verities of Obsidian out of the Obsidian pits, just as the gold sheen is showing you..

Shaped in a rotary (45C). Two runs of 60/90, 0ne week in 120/220 and one week in 600 SiC. Moved them to a UV-3 vibe and finished with two days each of 500 AO, 1000 AO, and polish. Normally I would have ground out the chips after the 600 SiC stage or kept rough grinding but I just wanted to see how they would finish as a trial run. Overall I think they finished pretty well. As soon as the 45C is open again I run more.
Very little of what I shipped home actually came from the pits. Almost all of it was just picked up from the ground as I wandered around the washes and hillsides.
