I decided to work a piece of a slab that I purchased a few weeks ago. It broke along a line when I made the cut and apparently wanted to be a heart. Anyway I started working it last night and I'm going to make it into something my daughter can hook on her key ring- she doesn't want a necklace, I've been informed. So, a few questions. Any suggestions on how to make it able to hook on when I'm finished? I'm thinking I need to drill a hole before I tumble it, but should I drill it before I shape it? Also, an ID on this would be great if anyone knows. I can put up a picture of the rest of the slab if it would help. Thanks for looking!

Has anyone had luck grinding a heart shape and then putting in a tumbler to round it out and polish? Does the point at the bottom wear away too much?

I would drill before tumble. Did I send you one of the pinch bails for rocks with holes drilled in them? If not, me bad. Had planned to. Know I sent an eye up bail. If you can drill a hole in the top of the heart and then epoxy the eye up in, that would work. You could also drill a hole on the front and do a simple wire wrap style bail. I do those for hearts and guitar pick pendants.
That is a beautiful rock. Perfect colors for a heart.

Here's the hearts that I've done @edchampion . One I wrapped, as you can see, but I think you can still see the point. Keep in mind that I'm fairly new at this stuff! The points didn't round much at all, these are pretty much the way I shaped them.

Here is the rest of the slab, in case anyone can tell me what it is. Dry then wet. Thanks!

I'm trying to figure out which way will be the longest lasting for a teenage girl. And thanks, I think so, too.

One thing about being new, you never know how something is going to turn out until you try! I'm learning more every day. Hopefully...

Hmmmm, something about that says ocean jasper to me. Red is pretty rare, too. Really cool slab. That key chain should come out great. Just keep in mind, however you plan to do it, that keychains get a lot of abuse. You don't scrimp on the glue you use.

I was thinking more Guadalupe Poppy from the slab pic. Weird piece, but sometimes the red goes all the way to the center, sometimes the white crowds out the red "petals." The colors seemed to be in the ranges of Guadalupe to my eye.

Ocean Jasper, huh? Thanks! I finished shaping it yesterday- I'm leaving the top flat- and put it in the tumbler. Then I'm thinking I want to glue a finding on the back but I may change my mind. And I'm now also kicking myself for not getting more. Oh well, there's always next year....

Thanks! It's going to be a Christmas present, that should give me time to get it polished and figure out what I'm doing.

Not that it matters to my daughter, but I would like to learn more about the stuff that I'm working with. Thanks!

I'm with Rockjunkuie and Hummingbirdstone, it looks like OJ. Nice job on the hearts! Thanks. I looked up both Ocean Jasper and Guadalupe Poppy Jasper and I honestly can't figure out how to distinguish between the two. And thank you for the compliment- I'm purposely leaving this one a little lopsided because I wanted to keep the patterns and colors that the stone has- I really like the contrast between the white and the red. Plus, it's slow going with a dremel!
