Finding pretty material for a sphere is hard. Had an idea to check out Santa Barbara Monumental, a company that makes cemetery headstones and memorials. The owner was busy with a client, so I stepped out into the back area and saw many slabs of thick beautiful granite. The owner joined me after a few minutes, and I explained that I was an amateur rock hound, didn’t need a memorial, and wanted to see if they had any broken pieces for sale, and I commented on some beautiful green granite in the yard. He led me to the corner where some remnants were piled. There were two sawn slabs 3” thick with polished faces. He said they were too small for them to use, so I was welcome to them, saving him the trouble of throwing them away. I offered to pay, but he insisted they were free. Even offered to carry one to the car out front. Don’t know the name of the granite or the quarry/source, but I intend to make some spheres, and give one to him. I’ll ask about the details of the stone then. This is dense, fine-grained, beautiful stone. One is 16"x4"x3", other is 12"x6"x3". Both are nicely square. Two cuts gets a cube. Photos aren't color-true - it's really quite green.

I dub thee Green G. : ) ************************* Yes that's a name that would work. I've done granite once before from a chunk of Yosemite granite that fell off HalfDome. That stuff is really hard. Should have learned my lesson. Took forever to grind the Granite Planet.

That was a sweet deal for some nice looking rock.
A little off topic, but your post made me want to kick myself in the butt (like I could really do that!). I had a memorial granite bench made for my parents. I should have gotten some scraps from it to cab some cabs for family members. Duh. I just now thought of it after seeing your post.

That's a great idea, rockjunquie.
Whoever made the granite bench can identify the granite and maybe provide a matching piece if you so desire. It's not quite the same, but maybe close.
