That's the Maitake, Asian name for Hen of the Woods. I have the culture on order but it's going to be awhile. Gotta get steamer/pasturizing barrel built. it's a very slow growing mushroom that can take up to 3 years for a log to fruit. When I do, you got dibs,😁. When I was a kid back in Chicago my grandfather would get them from friends of his who would go and find them in the woods in Wisconsin and Michigan. Very secretive about their "houby" (Czeck for mushroom) hunting grounds. They would cut the shrooms off at the base and they would regrow the next year. You could never get a good mushroom hunter to tell you their secret picking places. Kind of like some rockhounds. Later when I was working downtown there was a farmers market every week across the street from my office building. There was a guy who sold mushrooms there and every once in a while he would have some and I would buy them. If I remember correctly, fall was the time of year you could find them in the woods.

I love Hen of the Woods and Chicken of the Woods. I don't know if those are the correct names. Around here, they are used for two similar, but different mushroom varieties.

The guys around here are asking what I am using to catch the trout. Here's a photo for Tom. These are salt infused 4" bass grubs that I cut short. I'm fishing in the eddies below a sand bar where the inlet begins to narrow out - very fast moving water. Chartreuse color works here sometimes but in the dingy water the pearl color works for me. Just caught three more trout before dark. Tides are changing now and will be dropping early in the mornings. I like to fish as the tide drops about three hours before low tide. That broiled flounder with salt, pepper and fresh lemon was good. I'm jealous on the flounder Rick, sounds wonderful.
Tom wants to know if you use just the jig, or with a a bobbing cork ?

Just the jig, retrieve slow and bump the bottom. If I had a juvenile sense of humor, I'd say that's exactly what my wife told me the other night! But, since I'm trying to act more mature, I'm not going to say that!

RickB the red/white Mirrorlure was a classic back in the 70's. New wave is lead heads with rubber. There was also a lure that was made out of like ~3/8 inch stainless pipe with a funny pointed lead head jammed in the front end. Overall length was about 2.5 inches, used 2 treble hooks, had various colors. It could be cast a mile(exaggerated)to quiet marsh waters or way way out off the surf. The main benefit of that lure was it's extreme casting range in quiet marsh waters to avoid disturbing the fish.

It is the fallen poplars that are cranking out the oyster mushrooms here brybry. Talk about being able to collect shear mass, those shrooms are totally prolific in this area code. Yes hummingbirdstones, that bike has a very user friendly long travel suspension and allows old men to stay on it whilst it goes over rough terrain at high speeds. It is the best fast speed dog running machine. She can hear the silent electric motor when the power is turned on and knows to turn on the speed at that point. Everytime i go out the door she runs over to the bike begging to do a chase. Not a lazy bone in that hound. Denise is considering running her in lure coursing competition. She will tear up the competition, maybe even able to compete with the greyhounds as she can do turns much faster, they would get her on the straightaways of course. It is a big deal to have a slower breed beat the greyhounds, really attracts attention from the crowd.

We entered her in the Mutt Derby in Florida at the greyhound track. She won in her class and THEN won overall- she beat ALL the bigger dogs and the runners.
We had to wait with our dogs at the gate and then walk to the end of the course for them to race to us. She was NOT having me walking away from her!!!! I think my son still has her trophy. She was my once in a lifetime canine companion. I miss her to this day.

Meet Pipa with the funny ears. She does not like having her ears twisted. Evident in her abused expression.

jamesp, same here with cottonwoods & tulip poplar. Might get a nice batch of chanterelles this summer. Mushroom hunters are pretty lipped about their hunting grounds. It's how some earn a living. There was a reality show that followed a few hunters but they were so anal about their grounds, they wouldn't let a camera shoot if it could possibly give away the location.

5 inch P. Vivax timber bamboo pole to be sawn up for wood to cook over. Bamboo wood is rich in sugar making yummy meat flavors. Or sawn into short 'canisters', stuffed with rice meat vegetables spices and placed in a fire upright as a cooking container. Common practice in Thailand.

There just happens to be 4000 acres of hardwood timberland owned by various owners in my backyard. They are constantly cutting trees at different time intervals and leaving a lot of big limbs and wolf trees on the ground. No shortage of mushroom wood. The most mushrooms I have ever seen in in the moist Georgia mountains often on the north facing slopes. I think it is legal to collect shrooms on the National lands.

Not sure about collecting legalities. I own just shy of 35 acres and the land owners around me have given permission to me for collecting mushrooms.

Dogs are funny, often times they aren't blessed with the athletic equipment but they can blow away the competition and steal the show. It's in their mind, some call it grit or game. In this pup's situation she has that grit and an unusual runner's physique for a RR, and has a love for running constantly. Guessing those other RR's are in for a challenge.

A chef friend in Atlanta said that those upscale chefs in the big city pay nice for fresh collected mushrooms. I assume you have a market to sell to.

My new EFV (electric fishing vehicle). Takes me farther and quicker down the beach for more fishing time. Top speed 20mph. Saves me a couple miles of extra walking a day with a bad knee and back. Second photo is a point I knapped today from a piece of flint ridge.
