A nice set of points Rick.
But I wonder the technique of straightening the river cane ?
Looks like maybe heat ?
Is there a bow in the making as well ?
Patty
Thanks Patty. I use a heat gun to get the bends in the (dry) river cane charring hot, some use a small propane burner/torch. The bends are usually at the section joints. Using thick leather gloves, and holding either side of the river cane, bend it a little more in the same direction that it is going which makes a larger bend - this actually keeps it from snapping. At this point, bend it back the other opposite direction and straighten it out. Next, move to a cooler section away from the area that you just bent and repeat the process there. You have to let sections you just worked on cool and set up before bending next to them. I won't be making him a bow or quiver and he has the arrows now. It's been quite awhile since I made any arrows and now I remember why. I spent entirely too much time on the project. My friend bought the four arrows and three knives from me recently. He is putting them in a shadow box for himself except for one of the knives. His son in law, who has terminal cancer, collected arrowheads for years. He is going to give him one of my stone knives to add to his collection before he passes. His collection is going to be passed along as a family heirloom. What an honor to have your stone knife passed down.

It is nice that your friends son can appreciate them now Patty Had to go with this one for my 5,000th post as it took me many years to hit the mark. These are two of the knives my friend will get Saturday. Flint River and one Buffalo River. Both handles are Southern live oak root from blown down trees. One handle has some charring on one side probably from an old controlled burn along the coast. RickB

RickB Grats on the milestone. If I had one request at the end it would be to so see my life stats. Like where would I rank in percentile of times I've bumped my head, number of times of sworn, how much I've wasted on microbrews, etc. Saw another knapper at the rock show. I think I know who's got better quality knives

Thanks for the likes and positive comments. Practice makes perfect and I'm getting lots of practice as I've put more effort into knife blades rather than arrowheads. Slowing down and putting more thought into the blades has helped - once you take a flake or chip off you can't put it back if you make a mistake.

According to local news, Wisconsin is having the worst air quality in the USA lately. Yesterday it was in the Very Unhealthy For All Groups category by me. I live in somewhat of a valley, with elevation changes to the North, West and East nearby. Yesterday, I could smell smoke in the air when I did AM chores at about 7:45. There was also a strong smell of chemicals, as local farmers were spraying crops with an airplane and helicopter. I usually do not smell the chemicals, but the heavy air is causing it. Looking East from near my barn. The hill is obscured by smoke. Looking South from my yard. I will be so glad when there is no longer heavy smoke in the air all of the time. I am what is considered a "Sensitive" group when it comes to air quality. Yesterday, I was maxing out on allergy medicines. Worked an almost full, very busy shift, which was a welcome relief from breathing in smoke/chemicals.

RickB You should see it at sunset. Then it is lavender colored smoke. I am usually at work then, so cannot take a photo.
