A mix of some chalcedony (sold to me as red/blue/yellow jasper, "zebrite" onyx, and mookaite) has been tumbling for a week, so I cleaned out the barrel today. I'm fully intending these to tumble at least another week in coarse, but I thought I might as well take some photos since I failed to do so in the beginning.
All of these were fairly inexpensive ($2.99-$3.88/lb for the basic jaspers, $6/kilo for the onyx, and $7/lb for the mookaite). Some of these are different angles of the same rock, but there are several photos overall. I'll update with more photos (and will probably also update the subject title) each time I clean out the barrel.
I'm not sure what's going on with this one...
The top edge on this one is still rough, but this one reminds me of when your ketchup and mustard touch but aren't mixed.
This one looks really porous. Billed to me as yellow jasper. Any advice on to why it looks like this? Something in the tumbler? Just a bad rock?
And this one is more mixed ketchup and mustard I really do like the patterns in this from the side, but that top is not appealing to me at all
Not my favorite.
Another one that's kind of rough on the bottom. Lots of little crevices.
It's a shame this photo is blurry because I actually like this piece. I think these are the same piece (I need to pay more attention I think)
Probably my favorite piece. This one was part of the mookaite. I just love the color.
Some of the "zebrite" onyx; I love the banding but am annoyed at how this didn't seem to glisten at all when wet (like some of the others in this mix). It also seemed to dry quicker than the other pieces.
Another zebrite I don't love.
From the red jaspers. I don't know why, because I normally do NOT like this color, but I kinda like this one with that translucent band in the middle.
And a perplexing stone. I literally am not sure what mix this came in because it does not look like or act like any of the other pieces in this mix. Reminds me of a disgusting wad of mint gum you find underneath a chair in your old middle school. I really don't like it.
I think this is my favorite piece of the blue jasper. It reminds me of a mountain. Both same piece.
A boring red
A muddied mustard yellow, not sure what I think other than "this looks dirty."
Another yellow, but I wonder what (impurity) is causing that greyish-green band. I like this one more.
More Zebrite
Another mookaite which also is struggling to "smooth out"
Some interesting folds. I really like those "creases." But that might smooth out this week.
Zebrite that is more black
I like the banding in this red
This zebrite is mostly a light grey with only slight banding at the bottom, but the bottom of it looks very interesting right now. (It's probably not interesting to anybody else)
Another yellow with some little swirls inside.
A piece of mookaite that I LOVE because it reminds me of a sailboat or sunset falling behind an acacia tree. The black spots are fairly deep pits. I don't think I want to entirely smooth those out as I really like them.
And finally, another piece that reminds me of an ice capped mountain. I can't decide if this is my favorite or not, but it's definitely up there.
