Since this is Fairburn Friday, I'd like to share a link to a thread by Don (jakesrocks ), he had on another site. He passed away a little over a year ago.
I tried to just post links to some of his photos here, but it didn't work out. So here's a link to the entire thread Fairburn Agates. South Dakota's State Gemstone from way back in 2015, on the forum opalholicsanonymous.com I wasn't sure this forum was still operating, but apparently it is.
This is a great photo of "some" of his collection. This is a lo-res pic, a higher res photo is on the third page of the thread.
You could say Don had the Fairburn addiction bad! Don had also sent me a photo to post for him a few years back, when he was having problems posting photos. I don't recall the entire story, but one? some? Fairburns were stolen from someone, so Don wanted to post a BOLO.
Here is the photo he had me post:
I can't find the post on RTH (should have been July 2015, when he sent me the photo?), and I sadly don't remember the full story. Don't know if they/it was ever recovered.
Take a look at Don's thread on that other site. The photos will have you drooling until next Fairburn Friday, lol.
ETA - I read more of Don's post "on that other site" and saw this addition:
So I guess they weren't in the photo he had me post. But so glad she got them back!
(Well, maybe the red one is in both of those photos. I can't really tell.)

Those are great, Mike. Lake Superior agates are considered better without the quartz too. Thanks Rob. I like quartz, like I said. What's your opinion? I prefer my agates without quartz, but it doesnโt ruin them either.

It's Friday! Here's today's rock. A hard one to photograph in this light & I decided to put a few closeups to show the patterns. Thanks for the look and happy Friday people!

I guess Mike what a find!
are they mostly just sitting up on the surface of the ground?
not many rocks on the surface there... right ? so every rock as a high level percentage of potential?
I guess the better question to ask is:
what do the leaverite in that area look like ? are they overly plentiful? maybe you could post some of those?
jus curious...

Thanks, mohs! You're partly right. Most of the time we find them laying on the ground, but sometimes just an edge of the stone will be peeking up. Unfortunately there is a very low percentage of finding one. There are huge rock beds that we search and we also do quite a bit of wandering in the grasslands checking in the tall grass. The leaverites are cool, too, a mixture of prairie and other agates, pet wood, jaspers, chalcedony, etc. Sometimes we'll look for 5 or 6 hours, carefully checking stones and not find a one. I'll try to get some better pictures of what we look through next time I get out, but I did find this one that I had saved...

That's not even a good sample of some of the rock beds. I'll try to remember to get a better pic for you. Come on out, there's only 94,480 acres in the Oglala National Grasslands where we hunt. I'll show you around. I haven't been lucky enough to find any artifacts or cool fossils yet and of course you can't keep stuff you find on the grasslands. But people find them on private lands, someday I'll get some access and look. It's a great time to be out there! You know I will.

Wow, that's a nice one. I would gladly wander around all day to find one of those. Sure is dry compared to the beaches where I hunt.
