Another nice septarian turd! I’m bettering you could make Septarian (turd) Saturday. I’m relatively sure Loki would find poop funny. Also, as the agriculture god, he must be in favor of manure.

I always love seeing these pictures!
It's also fun being able to tell the dudes in my life (dad/husband/brother) "See? You CAN polish a turd" (generally after one of asks me "What kinda rock is that? That's pretty cool.")

Is that what this is??? I swear I'm never going to be able to identify petrified wood in this area...unless it LOOKS like a piece of wood! Thanks for the ID. Thanks to both of you because I was wondering myself. I have (had? Who knows around here lately...) a couple pieces that look kind of similar.

The septarian aspect of these turds have had me pondering for a long time at how it came to be. I'm still not certain but I hypothesize that the turds dried up and got cracks that later filled with silica after a burial event. Whatever it is I haven't seen this aspect in other coprolites coming from other areas in the world. I'd like to know if this trait is exclusive to the southern Utah hadrosaur coprolite fields.

Here's a specimen with obvious cracks that were probably formed from drying out and subsequent shrinkage.

Now here's another specimen that had cracks that were filled with silica and then the softer surrounding material was eroded away leaving the harder silica standing proud.

TURD TUESDAY I just noticed that the agate filling looks like a male Siamese fighting fish (Betta).

RWA3006 - I've seen you mention a couple times that you would rate certain coprolite pieces as "museum grade...or quality". I've been wondering what you see in the pieces as being that level of coprolite? (Not meant as a "needling" type of question...I'm truly curious as to what makes a "trophy" poo.)

Great question. I look for popping colors, vibrant contrast, high degree of agatization, gastrolith content, and interesting exterior shape and texture.
Many specimens are not agatized throughout as well as I like, thus don't polish that well.

It's a cold dark Sunday winter evening and how better to cheer the place up than to sip egg nog and gaze at another coprolite!

Time to wander out into the orchard and pay homage to the sentinels of antiquity. Wife thinks I'm nuts.
