This chasm cuts right through coprolite country.[img alt=" " There was a Bad Day at Black Rock (or wherever this secret place is) The country was really jumbled.

RWA3006 Beautiful scenery to look at while searching for coprolite. Are dino bone, footprints found in that area?

RWA3006 Beautiful scenery to look at while searching for coprolite. Are dino bone, footprints found in that area? I stumble upon bone occasionally, but have not personally found footprints though they are known in the area. Petrified wood is abundant in the layers I hunt and also in adjacent strata above and below.

I love pictures of the terrain / locations of our various finds. Having a thread of just location pictures would be fun and educational. Comparing all our different hunting areas is pretty cool.

Thanks Walt. This information might explain quite a bit about this glorious subject.

Randy, do you make the spheres? No, these were made by an old gent who passed away. If you gave him a bunch of material that was prepped on the saw he would return half to you as spheres. I thought he was generous.

Someone once said "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken poop". Apparently he never tried to polish dino dung. Nice Hadrosaur dinodungspheres .

Little balls of poo. Second row from the left third sphere back looks like the planet Mars!

Randy, do you have a lot of cabs made out of coprolite? I open the thread every week and I can see how the majority of specimens getting posted definitely call for being cut and face polished. Just curious because I frequently try and picture cabs made out of them...

Ok, it's Saturday night and if you find yourself on the coprolite thread you probably, like me, need to get a life. Let's study crap external morphology on this specimen. There are clues to be discovered... TURD TUESDAY TURD TUESDAY RWA3006, I've been curious about the differences between some of the last coprolites you posted. The top one is the lumpy, agglomeration of pellets. The middle one looks very different. Not only does it have a smooth exterior, but the interior is substantially uniform in color and "texture." The bottom one seems to be somewhere in between the two. The exterior is smoother than the top sample, but not as smooth as the middle. The interior has patches of the creamy white coloring of the middle one, but more fracturing like the top. There are hints of similar fracturing in the middle one. Are these from the same type of dinosaur? The smoothness of the middle sample seems so different in comparison to the top that they do not seem that closely related. Or could the conditions in which the turds were dropped be so different that they were simply preserved in drastically different ways? The middle and the bottom look like it could have been simply a matter of how dried out the sample was before it was buried.

Just curious because I frequently try and picture cabs made out of them... Strangely, I don't have many cabs out of coprolite. Don't know why??? Guess I'll have to remedy that but it will have to wait till I'm done rebuilding my shop. I'm officially in limbo without the shop and it's frustrating. That gives me an idea ... I have a couple coprolite slabs sitting around just begging to be cabbed. I'll post photos of them and label them #1 and #2. These will be sent to the first two volunteers who would like to cab them and post their photos in this thread. Be sure to state which cab you want and then PM me your mailing address and then we will anxiously await for you to show us your creation!

We know from the fossil record there were numerous species of sauropods in the area and the strata these coprolites came from spanned millions of years, so I believe it would be safe to think the variety of species, habitat, diet could have varied quite a bit. It should also be noted that the sediment immediately surrounding each specimen varied a bit and could have easily produced significant variation between individual coprolites. It's intriguing to me to contemplate that there could be a longer time span from the early sauropods to the late ones, than there is between the last ones and our time. Wrap your mind around that!

LOL - That's not what I was driving at by the way! Perusing the forum, I just don't see a lot of examples of them... When are you thinking you'll get the shop back in order?
