SLAB #2 This one is a heel cut but it's special because of the ghosts of twig cross sections in it. There's four of them.

Strangely, I don't have many cabs out of coprolite. Don't know why??? Guess I'll have to remedy that but it will have to wait till I'm done rebuilding my shop. I'm officially in limbo without the shop and it's frustrating. That gives me an idea ... I have a couple coprolite slabs sitting around just begging to be cabbed. I'll post photos of them and label them #1 and #2. These will be sent to the first two volunteers who would like to cab them and post their photos in this thread. Be sure to state which cab you want and then PM me your mailing address and then we will anxiously await for you to show us your creation! I want slab one or two! LOL - That's not what I was driving at by the way! Perusing the forum, I just don't see a lot of examples of them... When are you thinking you'll get the shop back in order? Oh I know, it just seems like a fun thing to do and I'm glad to give somebody a little crap. I'm hoping the shop will be done by mid summer.

SLAB #1 I'm jumping on this opportunity for slab one! I have a couple heel cuts that I've chickened out working just yet, so I have too many trepidations about working slab 2. I'm more than willing to pay for the shipping and I'd be more than happy to send you the cab after it's done. I'd like to get at least two out of this one and give the other one to my father-in-law...

Randy - you're awesome! Thank you so much for this opportunity! - I've been dying to work with coprolite for quite awhile...ever since my father-in-law showed me his necklace. I'd like to make the cab for him into a hat pin. I think he'd really love it! Thank you thank you thank you! I'll definitely do my best on these cabs and will post a TON of pics!

RWA3006, I've been curious about the differences between some of the last coprolites you posted. The top one is the lumpy, agglomeration of pellets. The middle one looks very different. Not only does it have a smooth exterior, but the interior is substantially uniform in color and "texture." The bottom one seems to be somewhere in between the two. The exterior is smoother than the top sample, but not as smooth as the middle. The interior has patches of the creamy white coloring of the middle one, but more fracturing like the top. There are hints of similar fracturing in the middle one. Are these from the same type of dinosaur? The smoothness of the middle sample seems so different in comparison to the top that they do not seem that closely related. Or could the conditions in which the turds were dropped be so different that they were simply preserved in drastically different ways? The middle and the bottom look like it could have been simply a matter of how dried out the sample was before it was buried. Good observations. We know from the fossil record there were numerous species of sauropods in the area and the strata these coprolites came from spanned millions of years, so I believe it would be safe to think the variety of species, habitat, diet could have varied quite a bit. It should also be noted that the sediment immediately surrounding each specimen varied a bit and could have easily produced significant variation between individual coprolites. It's intriguing to me to contemplate that there could be a longer time span from the early sauropods to the late ones, than there is between the last ones and our time. Wrap your mind around that! That last statement is something I often have to remind myself. There is that fact that floats around that T-Rex was closer in time to humans than it was to the stegosaurus. Compared to the age of dinosaurs, the age of humans is nearly inconsequential in the geological record. The fact that there could be TENS of MILLIONS(!!!) of years between those three samples is mind boggling. It also amazes me that so much information can be extracted from these samples given that there are so many variables that could affect the turds from a single species. What if it was raining that day? Hotter or colder than average? Tummy troubles after eating some bad weeds? Leisurely poo vs having the crap scared out of it when chased by a predator?

I’m sure any cabs that come from them will be great and have a fun story to go with them, but I don’t think I could do anything but appreciate them for what they are. (And I completely understand the irony of the above statement given that we would have no idea how amazing those slabs are if you hadn’t cut them in the first place! If only Michelangelo had kept working on David to really make him look good...)

I'm gonna try and make it more perfecter... LOL Plus...there's more poop where this came from! I've wondered what bobby1 would do with this slab with his style of making king sized cabs. Is this a hint? Well, you made me go look at the cabs Bobby's posted. I hadn't perused those before. There is obviously some amazing specimens he's produced, especially since he contributes submissions to magazines. Now, this is not a gripe by any means...more something I've noticed while trying to look at how other people shape their cabs. No one takes side shots of their cabs showing their domes. I wanted to see what kind of dome Bobby was producing on cabs of that size, and I could never tell with all the face-on shots of the cabs. It's pretty much that way with all the more experienced cab makers...it's always beautiful pictures face-on... But - but - but . . . Slab 1 is PERFECT AS IS! Both of those slabs are beautiful! I’m sure any cabs that come from them will be great and have a fun story to go with them, but I don’t think I could do anything but appreciate them for what they are. If only Michelangelo had kept working on David to really make him look good...) Your last sentence is particularly genius...

How is it that cavemen survived the asteroid but the dinosaurs didn’t?
Social distancing. They stayed 65 million years apart.
