I should also mention that in places where the tunnels were left empty it created voids that were favorable for the formation of clear/blue chalcedony which is commonly found to have filled voids in coprolite, geodes, thunder eggs, etc.

Randy, that was a great writeup and great examples you've shown of the dung beetle activity!

jasoninsd that sure looks like a southern Utah coprolite! How sure are you about it?

jasoninsd that sure looks like a southern Utah coprolite! How sure are you about it? That's what I thought!! I cut it in half, and was going to slab it, but immediately stopped and knew I wanted to show you the pics... I'm positive it came from my rock pile of finds from here...

If that is dung beetle poop in a coprolite, then I guess that would make it a coprolite-in-a-coprolite! Very cool! The one with the hole doesn't look like it have many other explanations.

I was cutting rocks I've found here in South Dakota, and this one surprised me. To me, this interior looks strikingly like Coprolite! Danged "impooster"! LOL It looks like a Bubble Gum agate from the outside. It doesn't have that squished look from impact and gravity pulling it to the ground Like Coprolite does. Maybe the animal was constipated and this turd was impacted, so it didn't flatten when it hit the ground. Or possibly it landed on something softer than the poo...? Cool chunk of whatever you got there!

Here's a photo of one I recently cut that has a prominent rind. You can see it's at least a half inch thick in places. The interior regions are significantly more agatized than the outer layer. Interestingly this one also has a rare patch of marcasite in it too. Both patches of marcasite in the top piece resemble flying birds

I think I'm going to take that "impooster" down the the geology department at the School of Mines & Technology one of these days. I've got several other pieces that I'd like to get some identifications on as well as this pseudo piece of crap! LOL

Today we shall observe Friday the 13th with this specimen. Then I'll take the creepy manikin to work to startle my coworkers. It's great fun to place it so a person comes around a corner face to face with "Stephanie"
