Another thread inspired me to start this one. It mentioned aDventurine.
Another one that always bugs me is AlexanDERite.
Finally, I wonder when Tiger Eye became Tiger's Eye.
Hope other members will add more examples.

Mookaite. I used to call it Mookite until I learned it was from the Mooka Creek in Australia.

When people call the different varieties of calcite, Onyx, it makes me cringe.
It's a travertine.

The Dictionary of Gems & Gemology by Robert M. Shipley (founder of the GIA) says it's "tiger-eye". But "tiger's-eye" was the recommended usage when I took my GIA courses quite a few years after that dictionary was written. So who really knows? |

That's enlightening. My great-uncle had a tiger eye ring when I was very young. He definitely wasn't a GG, but I had only heard it called tiger eye until a few years ago.

There was a seller on ebay that I bought a lot of material from. He spelled Tahoma as Tehoma. He was about the only one selling the material so he could spell it however he wanted.

Yep, not all Canada Geese are Canadian, eh?
Then there's the older gent on an online shopping channel who sells Sardinian Coral.
He says it in a way that makes me think I might find bits of that coral in tins of small fish.

But, I was taught that travertine was made in geysers and other geothermal zones. And if I'm following my own thoughts, the banded calcite material we discuss has no name known by me. So, thanks! Couldn't agree more......been down that road here with a few newer members......Just because it's GREEN , slick and shiny.....lol.....Nephrite and Jadeite are constantly confused, thanks to the hundreds of resale sites that don't have a clue tooooooo...! |

All the hoping and wishing in the world isn't gonna change the reality of the chemical and geological composition of the material......Even putting it under your pillow at night and dreaming of jewels won't change Calcite from a Moh's 3 to a Moh's 7........lol
