Could be stamps, coins, rubber-band balls, pretty much anything.... In my case, I still have two of my favorite prizes from the German Überraschungeier ("surprise eggs"), made by Kinder -- the metal warrior figuriness. I used to have a decent collection as a kid (I got very good at shaking the eggs and identifying them by sound). I still have two, around 45+ years later (not all successfully made the move from Germany to the US, and some were lost over the years, but this was my favorite, and I kept track). For me it is Iris and Herringbone Depression Glass. There were some pieces in my household when I was a child. My Uncle and Mom were always looking for more at garage sales, auctions, shops and markets. My first auction purchase in 1974 was a set of clear bowls in this pattern. My Uncle later gave me the set of 6 cups/saucers that were in the house as a Birthday present. Many years later, my china cabinet is full of this pattern. Must have over 300 pieces. Some are in boxes. I remember where and when almost all pieces were purchased. FYI. The 2 porcelain cup/saucer sets belonged to my G-Grandma. They are treasured family heirlooms and in nice shape. The purple water glass on the top shelf, right side, belonged to my G-G Aunt. My Grandma used it as a bedside water glass. It is in perfect condition. Grapevine Lattice, Carnival Glass. This is only half of the china cabinet.

Oh Lordy. I am a collector- or, I was one. Not a hoarder by any means, but I got to the point where I hated dusting everything, so I gave almost everything away to my kids - pre-death. Probably my best and biggest collection was antique wooden boxes. I had at least 10 beauties. I gave my favs away except for one. I have it put away so no pic, but it's Tunbridgeware from England. I'm guessing it was used for tea. Another long gone fav was a crushed velvet dressing table box from around 1850. It was fitted with a brush, comb, perfume atomizer, etc. Now, I guess I collect slabs. Don't have to dust them, either. Yay!

While there I took a tour of the Fenton Glass factory across the river in Williamstown, West Virginia. I'm not a big fan or anything, but it was still an interesting tour.

Used to collect Couroc decorative trays, plates, bowls, etc, made of black phenolic, with different types of items pressed into it. They were made in Monterey, CA, starting in 1948 and continuing for 40 years. I no longer collect it, but I still have a dozen pieces or so. Put away, like @rockjunquies' treasures.I also used to collect chicken stuff, or as my DH would call it, "Jean's chicken shit." My collecting got out of control so I had a garage sale and sold a bunch of it. Then there's shot glasses. The ultimate are the cross collectibles, like this: I've also got some shot glasses with chickens on them, lol. Oh, and can't forget the seashells, been collecting them since I was a young'un. Collecting rocks just one more thing to take up space.

I recently transplanted my pet cactus, Mr. Grimm, into a 7.5 inch pot. Mr. Grimm is the offspring of Spykl, which I was given back in college circa 1989. Spykl had a series of unfortunate accidents and is no longer with us, but did have three offspring, one of which fell off the hood of a car.
Happy Clown, Tiny Dancer, Cheetah, and Sunny Speckled are currently flowering; several other orchids are in spike and will be opening any day. The other 20 or so orchids flowered earlier in the year.
I also collect Civil War artifacts. In fact I have a small museum. I especially love the original pictures and letters, and medical memorabilia.

I don't collect anything now. I have inventories of cigars and lapidary equipment and supplies. About 30 years ago, I collected rose bushes. There are a lot of different kinds with historical backgrounds. I planted around 150 over 3 or 4 years and then the deer ate most of them. 7 years ago, I planted about 10 and made deer proof cages. They are still doing well but it's a garden not a collection.

Unfortunately, I'm a collector of stuff. It varies at times, I just get a small collection of something and move on. The one thing I've stuck with for 35 years is custom made knives, I've posted some here in another thread. I do keep some notes on things, my wife will be overwhelmed by the scope of what's here. My latest is going to be a few Katsina Dolls, part of the Hopi religion. This Hoot'e by a Hopi carver.:

My dad has some beautiful amaryllis. I've never gotten into those, but appreciate their beauty Right now I'm in love with Dahlias and have spent more money than I care to admit on them My succulent and cacti collection is dwindling as I gave away a lot when I moved but I kept some and I probably will keep it small now that I'm in a different climate

Rocks are my largest collections, Utah coprolite and Wyoming nephrite. I'm at eleven and three tons respectively. I also collect weathered stones I call eccentrics.
I also collect pre 1920 whiskey and medicine bottles. Been working on these since I was a kid. Probably have close to 200.
Another collection I have is pre WW2 Argentine military firearms.
Rocks, booze, and guns. Yep, that's me.

Obviously, a trick question. Why would anybody collect anything other than rocks? ;-)

I've got one that has, I think, 4 lines of text embossed on the outside of the bottle. Also a full bottle of Chilean wine. I don't know how old it is. Everything else was at least 50 years old.

I focus on bottles that had cork stoppers instead of threaded mouths and if they have a purplish hue from magnesium in the glass, then that's a bonus. Flattened vest pocket whiskey bottles are awesome, as are medicine bottles with raised lettering. One of my favs is a medicine bottle that says: THE GREAT DR. KILMERS KIDNEY LIVER AND BLADDER REMEDY I get a kick out of this stuff.
