After posting that pic of the pet wood in the other forum, I read the posts to my hubby. This led to an argument (minor) about cutting rocks. He says you have to know how to follow the grain of the rock, that you can't just cut them in any direction.
I said no way, if you have the proper equipment you can cross cut to get those beautiful slabs.
Am I wrong?? Do you have to learn how to "read" a rock before you can cut it?

Just make sure it sits secure so that it does not damage your sawblade.

Some one posted some slabs awhile back going both against and with the grain. Someone had asked about it. They were both beautiful and different, all a matter of taste. Hell, cut one way, don't like it? Cut another! Experementation is half the fun!

Ha!!!! I am the winner then. I told him with the right saw you can cut any direction. Going to sit by the fire and have a few while I argue my point. LOL Thanks, Cher

Being able to "read" the rock and deciding which way to cut it is part of the art of working with rocks. I have cut a lot of rocks in different directions just to see the differences. The more rocks you cut, the better you get at reading them.

Hey Cher, I hope you really rub the salt into the wound The more you work with rock, the more you will learn of their potential. Try different angles and you will be amazed at how different kinds of stone look when cut at different angles. It's part of the fun of cutting rocks! Enjoy, John

I think he was confusing the cutting of "real" gems. Such as diamonds.
