Spent a couple hours looking through old posts here, but would like recent experience input. I found a great deal on a barely used magnasonic jewelry cleaner. Have not used it yet.
My logic was to use it for cleaning some specimen rocks, rocks that I want to maintain some character on between tumbling stages, jewelry and other small metal items I have. The rocks have pockets of druzy. Fossil corals and wood that I want to maintain some features of.
I learned that it is best to use hot water. Maybe add some Dawn dishwashing detergent. Limit use to about 15 minutes at a time. Always use the basket. A basket full of items can be combined. The unit will not remove tarnish on metal.
The manual and internet reviews say this will work for cleaning prescription glasses and watches. I am not brave enough to do that, unless anyone else here has done it with success. Somehow, putting a watch in water does not seem right to me. I would never put my prescription glasses or a gold, heirloom watch in water with other items. Probably would never put them in water.
Anyways, I would appreciate any comments. Thank you.

I have an older (30yrs) www.gesswein.com/c-44-ultrasonic-jewelry-cleaners.aspx. It has the option of 0-60 min or on continuously. I use it to clean vugs out of cabs when they are full of polish. I steal laundry detergent from my wife when she is not looking. an ultrasonic will heat the water due to friction but starting with host is good and the detergent helps lower surface tension... Soft things like the plastic lenses in glasses can be damaged if left in too long. Soft rocks can be damaged if left in too long. the finish on jewelry can be damaged if left in too long but with care I would try any of those things except the plastic lenses since most lens material has additional coatings that can be damaged. I have cleaned brass with the same water and detergent. use low foaming detergent. It is a great cleaning tool.

Beth, not rock related but: Years ago my wife put a 14k gold/shell cameo ring in a cleaner - never again. Totally ruined the cameo so we saved the gold. Do not clean pearls in there also as I'm sure it will eat them up too. The ultrasonic cleaner vanished years ago so I assume she has thrown it away.

Yes. Soft rocks/shells should not be put in. That is why I was concerned about using it for anything glass.
Sorry to hear about the cameo being ruined.

rmf thanks for the advice. This model can only be on for up to 15 minutes. It has various length of time settings. Think I will start with a couple of minutes for a nice Amethyst specimen and see what happens. Not use any detergent/soap the first time.
