Hi! Nice to meet everyone. I'm new here, although I've been reading this forum for awhile, and greatly appreciate your helpfulness to each other, Newbies, and the information found within. I've already settled on the wheels I'm going to get: the Baltic Abrasives Premium REZ wheels and have been in contact with the company. They've been very nice and helpful. The only problem is I don't know which grits to get for my machine that I have coming in. Here is the link to the specific wheels: www.baltic-abrasives.com/en/lapidary-wheels/soft-rez-lapidary-wheels/They also have their ELECTROPLATED diamond wheels (8“x1 1/2“x1“) + bushings, Hard Plastic body in the following Grits: 60, 80, 100, 180, 220, 360, 600. I did a lot of research before buying a machine as well. This will be my first one, and I have ordered the new C8 from Highland Park. It will be here soon so I'm excited for that. But I would like an informed perspective on grits for wheels and perhaps side mounted laps as well for final buffing as I don't know anything about what would be best. Is one style better than another? Is one company better? I've seen so many different options, from leather, felt, interchangeable magnetic ones, etc. So many questions and options!! Thank you all in advance for all of your help. I am overwhelmed to say the least.

A good starting point would be the grits and type(hard&soft) on a Diamond Pacific Genie. Jadecarver makes good 8 inch plastic core wheels and if you are in a hurry ship out of California. I bought one 8 inch soft wheel from baltic but haven't mounted it. I like soft wheels that look like Diamond Pacific and the baltic don't. I've had good luck with soft wheels from johnsonbrothers. If you are doing a lot of work you will need to replace your wheels at some point and you can try out different wheels. The baltic 6 inch are great.

Thanks! The machine I have on order is an 8" but it can accept 6" as well, or any combination. I currently make jewelry and sand castings, although I haven't updated my IG (and took down my Etsy) for awhile as I've been taking care of ailing family members so that's had to take a backseat for a little while. But I decided to make my own stones for my creations and I'd like to get a solid set of wheels from the get-go. I'm not in a huge hurry on delivery as the machine won't be here until mid-January. I have heard great things about Baltic's wheels from other lapidary artists, although they have said the initial break in can be murder on the fingers. I'm just lost on the grits and the end wheels/laps.

Welcome from Wisconsin!
The general usage is 80 & 220 hard wheels then 220 or 280, 600, 1200 & 3000 soft wheels.
Good luck with your new machine.

That C8 from HP looks good. I had not seen that. Can anyone tell me the difference between the Baltic abrasives soft rez diamond wheels and the premium soft rez diamond wheels?
