I've got an expanding drum that is somewhere around six or eight months old, and the rubber seems to be breaking down into some horrible black goop that sticks to everything. Might anybody know a a fix for this, or should I just cut my losses and buy another from a different source?

Are you running it with water? Get bleach on it? It sounds like it reverted, meaning that when it was made it stayed in the mold too long or too hot. Whoever made it probably loaded it up with silicone oil to hide it. I would contact the seller, if one is like that it may be a whole batch.

This wheel has always been run wet, and I don't add anything to the water, although the tap water here is pretty heavily chlorinated. I have two older drums that seem fine, but they are old steel core Raytech wheels. The new one is definitely chineseium, so maybe this really is just a get what you pay for moment.

Haven't heard of that with expandos, but the "horrible black goop that sticks to everything" sounds just like saw belts that get mineral oil on them.
Hope you get some resolution - or can at least figure out exactly what happened.

Sounds like it was made cheap to sell cheap! Sorry for the burden...

I can't say with any certainty what caused the problem, but the soft spots on the wheel are growing fast enough to notice a difference from day to day, even the arbor bore is getting gummy. Looks like it is headed to the dump.

nik chlorine in water wouldn't be enough to do that. Looks like either a really bad rubber compound or process issues. I retired from almost 40 years in the rubber industry and I have done repair work on a mold that makes expando drums.
