Dang. Maybe I need to drag a box of slabs out from under the bed and reactivate my eBay account. New old (guy) stock.

Just a thought... would it be helpful to people to create a database/thread of stones where the term is likely to be legitimate? I'm happy to get it started.
Even happy to add details like:
* Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper -- Morgan Hill, CA: the ranches where the original material was collected is closed. Many similar-looking jaspers can be found nearby and throughout CA, and other West Coast States * Silver Lace "Onyx" -- Calico Mountains, CA: the mine itself is closed, but some material can still be surface collected from tailings * Stone Canyon Jasper -- Parkfield, CA: the ranch where the original material was collected is closed. Many similar-looking jaspers can be found nearby and throughout CA, and other West Coast States
Also, as people add comments, I can add them to the top post to keep it easy to navigate without having to scroll through what will eventually and undoubtedly become a multi-page thread.

I really like that idea, stephan! For those of us newer to this, it would be an incredible help to know more about the origins of some of the stones and avoid potential missteps. There are so many naming discrepancies that it is sometimes hard to find the right information.

There are so many naming discrepancies that it is sometimes hard to find the right information. Too true, unfortunately. Even worse, when you find out that much of it it deliberately done by unscrupulous sellers. I'll get something started soon. I will definitely rely on input from others for additional info, especially for out-of-state, and some SoCal areas. I know some of the obvious ones from Oregon, but no means all. I'll need help on some of the tricky ones that close and re-open. Please note that I will continue to call Gary Green by that name, not the new one, and it will likely have a huge asterisk stating something along the lines of "there is old stock material available," but the mine has re-opened under new ownership.

stephan That's a great idea! Start the thread and I'll sticky it. Sounds like a really good resource.

I just put "old stock" in ebay search for lapidary material and got 544 hits. Scrolling down the list, I see a lot of con jobs. Since when was dalmation jasper old stock?

stephan - I'll echo with Brian said...it would be very much appreciated! There are a ton of members on here who also could contribute a ton of information with regards to their own "backyards" and what is or is not "old stock", closed mines, open mines, etc.! Stephan, a fantastic idea and a very sincere thank you for taking the reins on this one!
