I was recently given some pieces of NM Pet Wood by the resident Pirate on the RTH FB Page. Posting a sample of the many pieces I have. Any recommendations on how to remove the scale on the outer surface? I would prefer a method that does not require grinding. as that would eliminate most of the wood features. This is a sample of what I have. Can see there is a lot of beauty beneath the surface. Any recommendations on how to use chemicals, files, dremel, etc,. are appreciated. Thank you.

Muriatic acid removes lime scale and and Oxalic removes Iron. Use muriatic to remove lime before using the oxalic to remove the iron or the oxalic will turn the lime to a greenish yellow (Calcium Oxalate - major component of kidney stone) coating that is hard to remove. Or you could tumble in 400/600 grit.

Thanks for the info. Will wait to use acid until I can do it outside, in May.

An alternative acid for attacking iron stain is Super Iron Out which you can get at any box store in the cleaner section. Automotive wet sandpaper of various grits can be used to smooth and polish. Polish usually starts at about 1500 grit.
