I spent 30 minutes trying to get shot of this one without the reflections! I failed!! Stinking Water Oak, miocene. One heck of a lot of Forest Fire smoke here again today! From the big fires in Southern Oregon and Northern Ca.

@jadedvision, those are some incredible pieces of pet wood! The grain pattern and colors make the first piece look like a freshly finished piece of lumber.
I believe I have now revisited those pictures three separate times before posting this because I get so distracted by how beautiful they are that I kept forgetting to post something.

Brian I couldn’t believe it when I saw it, and bought as much as I could when I had the chance. I met a diesel mechanic who worked for a big construction company that builds highways, bridges, and other mega earth moving projects. During one of their jobs moving a hillside they hit these petrified trees standing vertically in the ground and as they graded the hillside down their dozers would hit the petrified wood and the tracks would start spinning until the wood basically exploded was how he described it. The logs were 190’ long and all got bulldozed to pieces then pushed into a giant hole, except for what this mechanic loaded with his crane into his service truck at the end of each day. RWA3006, JR8675309 thanks! I’ll throw a piece into the saw and put up some pics. That’s a heartbreaking story. If the logs were anything like that piece, it would have been an amazing treasure trove of pet wood. Millions of years in the making sacrificed for a road.

Private collectors are to thank for rescuing a lot of precious stone. I often find dino bone exposed on hill sides on BLM property that are eroded all to pieces when I return a couple years later.

I wonder how much he was able to take? It is most unusual. Looking forward to seeing some polished pieces.

The area is on the south side of the Carquinez Strait in San Francisco Bay, basically the west side of the Sacramento River delta. I’m guessing they were laying down when buried and geologic uplift is responsible for them appearing to be standing vertical. A lot of petrified trees were buried stand vertical!

It's SATURDAY! Here's a pile that I rescued from an estate liquidation. It probably would have been used for fill to expand the lot.

WOW! So, am I looking at a fireplace and a concrete pillar? Pretty impressive and cool looking structures! Created with concrete and petrified wood?

Randy RWA3006 , I love it! These days, you've gotta be careful about things we never had to worry about in the past. This happened in Ohio in December 2016, but the case was just filed 8/28/21. Guess some ambulance chaser got ahold of it, and saw $. The case is now being heard by The Ohio Supreme Court. Homeowner who fortified his mailbox with metal and concrete after repeated vandalism is sued by driver who was left paralyzed after crashing into it and flipping his truck in Ohio www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9712217/Homeowner-fortified-mailbox-concrete-vandalism-sued-paralyzed-driver.htmlIn a case in Durham, SC, court was also the outcome in a driver's death for hitting a reinforced mailbox in 1997. www.wral.com/news/local/story/166772/When will people start being responsible for their own actions ? I believe you have every right to make your mailbox how you want to make it! Everyone is so sue happy, they are looking for that deep pockets person to come along and make them rich, so they never have to work again. This needs to change!!! ETA - I have also seen stone and mortar pillars along the street in front of people's homes holding light fixtures off the ground. Evidently, there are postal rules that say mailboxes have to be "breakaway" in order to comply with USPS regulations. Oh, just read it again - it is only a postal service guideline. So not a hard and fast rule, only a guideline, or recommendation? Kinda makes me want to move out to the sticks, get away from these people.

It's at a house I used to own that has now been made into a run down rental. I built it in strict compliance with postal guidelines so nobody could complain. Two years ago the road was rebuilt and every mailbox was removed except mine. It's become a favorite local feature.

Many mailboxes in our area are built from brick and mortar or other massive materials. In fact many of us place large landscaping boulders to protect mailboxes and autos or people in the driveway.

That sounds totally cool to me, Randy RWA3006 , that your neighbors have them as well. I'm sure the people of Utah are good folks, and they understand they have been placed for protection, not to take out motorists. I'd be inclined to bolster my puny mailbox, but have neither the funds or the energy, lol. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure. ETA - If the Pyramids had mailboxes, they would be large behemoths, fit for a Pharoah! Not a puny metal box on a 1.5 inch pipe, lol.
