I have been trying to clean out some of my stock during these past winter months. Yea, Happy First Day of Spring. I thought I would show you my last Rainbow obsidian rough hiding in the bottom of my crate...I saved the best for last. Chunk was only the size of my fist. I slabbed it and the photos below reveal the colors of spring. I believe this was from Davis Creek that I purchased about 20 years ago.

Well you have ruined it for me. I have been looking at some Rainbow Obsidian from two different sources but was having a hard time deciding which to get. After seeing these pictures, the stuff I'm looking at seem like paltry offerings. Yours is stunning! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to pull the trigger on mine this weekend, but I'll be thinking of yours . Al

Yep, velvet (or peacock) obsidian is what it's usually called when it has the felted swirly appearance like that.
Sphere maker on another forum posted a sphere of it recently along with spheres of the typical rainbow. He didn't know it was called that, but contacted his supplier in Mexico and asked about it. Apparently his supplier indicated it is still found in the huge obsidian veins there.
Difficult to find online here. Pretty spendy if you do find it.

Thanks for the information. It did not have distinct bands like most other rainbow I have seen.

What is this… devilry? How do you even get ahold of this kind of rough?

What is this… devilry? How do you even get ahold of this kind of rough? Purchase maybe 20 years ago while ebay was still relatively new. Truth be told, I had no idea what I had since the fist sized piece was weathered and got doubly lucky in cutting it since I couldn't see the true colors until after I had it sliced. I guess ignorance is bliss in this case. I thought it came from Davis Creek, but as another RTH member suggested, it likely came from Mexico. No way of finding the source today.

Robin also found a guy who digs it at Davis Creek too. Yours looks bright enough that it probably is from there.

I have quite a bit of it, it's Mexico Royal Velvet and has been around ever since I can remember. I got hooked at Quartzsite and made a deal with the mine owner. I probably sold a ton or so for him and skimmed off what I really liked. So I have several shoe boxes of slabs now. He only exports to Japan and China now, there's a huge demand for it over there and he gets insane prices for it. So if you find it in the sattes it's likely old stock.
