I haven't polished rocks since last fall and now I forget some specifics (old age isn't for sissys). When I am tumbling a load in 600 grit, how do you know when that load is done and time to move to final polish? They have been in 600 grit for 2 days. The rocks feel like glass but no visual chnage. Is it time to move them to the titanium oxide barrel? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Nancy W.

Hi Nancy,,,, I have a load in my vibe right now that's been running #1000 grit for 3 days. The rocks have a definate shine to them and tomorrow I'll get them into the polishing stage. In a vibe unit the grit breaks down to 1/2 it's original size about every 12-24 hrs. In other words if you are running #600 grit for 24 hrs it will be broken down to about a #1200,,another 24 hrs and you have a #2400 and so on. I never put my rocks in the polish stage until they get a definate shine to them. Tom

Hi Nancy, Between 220 and 600 I close my eyes and go by feel. Between 600 and polish i want to see a light catching shine. My last batch I pushed ahead too fast and didn't get as good a polish as I had hoped for. I also re-do the whole grit/water every 12-24 hours, it breaks down really fast in a vibe. Try to keep the mix "pastey" too, maybe ad just a teasponn of water if it seems a little dry. Hope that helps,

Thanks for the great info. I didn't know the grit broke down so fast. I am going to refresh the grit now. Nancy W.

Hi Nancy, I would probably be moving along by now, I usually don't have them in prepolish more than 24-48 hours and by then they are nice and slick. Of course, I am also washing them out and recharging every 12 hours unless time is a problem. Also, I use a 500 and then a 1000 grit so I may have an extra step in there. Good luck!
