Yesterday's hike unexpectedly turned into a rock hounding trip, but as always, the good rocks were at the bottom of the two mile wet clay hill. I found a nice outcropping with agate, calcedony, and some cool agate filled breccia. As for the hike, I will admit that it was somewhat less than graceful, I wound up completely covered in mud and sporting a bunch of fresh bruises. And after all that, I didn't even have the tools to extract any rock, just one palm sized chunk of clear calcedony on basalt. The dog had a blast though. agate vein in situ IMG_20210519_102927 by nik1924, on Flickr part way down IMG_20210519_105218 by nik1924, on Flickr IMG_20210519_105130 by nik1924, on Flickr Rocky dog living the good life. Yeah...but now you know where to go back to when you're better equipped! I have a tendency to find the coolest...and BIGGEST rocks at the furthest point away from my truck! LOL Great pic of your hounding hound.

I made the trek back down to the outcropping this morning with some more appropriate tooling, I found a few decent size chunks of the breccia that were already free, and liberated a good handful of the agate/calcedony nodules from the basalt. Once again, a pretty good morning hike with the dog. Panorama from the middle of the outcrop, disregard the dog blur along the bottom edge, but it does capture a bit of his personality. Nik, that panorama shot just looks surreal! To a landlocked SD boy, that looks like a scene from The Blue Lagoon or something! Now, that brecciated "glamor" shot...WOW...just WOW!

Looks like that was definitely worth the return trip!

I usually hump back 80lbs of rock from far away, only to find the better stuff right beside my truck. ;-)
Lovely rocks you found. Sometimes, it is OK to go exploring without tools. You can always decide to go back later and will have exactly what you need to be effective. As for getting dirty, that is just part of the fun. Thanks so much for sharing.
