Hey Folks I need some quick input from those of you who've visited the following California locations:
1. Afton Canyon 2. Clear Creek Area
Andrew (my older son) wanted to go rockhounding one more time before he starts college next month. We've got a weekend reserved and I was originally thinking of Afton Canyon but then started reconsidering and looking at the Clear Creek area. I've been trying to get to both locations for years but never had the time. I hear great things about both locations and would like to make this trip extra special for Andrew before he moves out.
Your input / feedback on which location to choose, would be helpful!
Thanks for your input. Paul

Sounds like a great trip with your son! I’m sure it will be memorable either way.

Clear Creek areas is great for hounding although there are permits required to go into the areas where the Plasma Agate and other good rock are located. You have to buy the permits online from the BLM before you go. There is also a gate that you have to get through that has a code or a telephone number to call to get the code. I'm not sure which it is because someone else in the group I went with handled that. The campground close to there is nice but limited spaces on first come first serve basis. I haven't been to Afton Canyon so can't help you with any information on that. Hope you have a great trip with your son.

drocknut , thanks for the intel! Do you recall what the road conditions were like? e.g. Jeeps only type stuff or passable with trucks and Subaru's? Thanks!

Found a couple of relatively old threads that I'll show Andrew and see what he thinks on where to go. Thanks!

drocknut , thanks for the intel! Do you recall what the road conditions were like? e.g. Jeeps only type stuff or passable with trucks and Subaru's? Thanks! At the time the road conditions weren't really good because it had rained so the road with slick and I had to put my truck in 4x4 to get up a few of the hills. It is generally passable with 4x4 truck or high clearance vehicles. It is a primitive road but not a jeep trail for sure. It is dirt and gravel but when wet it's pretty slick. You just have to use common sense.
