Hi everyone!
My friend is a gardener and bought a big bag of marble “chunks” to use for drainage or something. I, of course, took some of those marble chunks to see what would happen if I tumble them.
A man on TikTok (I post rock tumbling videos) is insisting it is not marble.
Is there ever a situation where a garden supply store would sell brand name marble chunks in a bag, but it would not be marble? I am sure he thinks it is snowy quartz, but I would think if something is sold as marble, it would be marble.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks!

Quick test hit it with a little acid and marble will react, Quartz will not. Take a pocket knife or nail and try to scratch it marble will scratch, quartz will not. I use bags of that stuff for mineral grab bags and one time got a bag of crushed quartzite "that was labeled "white landscape rock"

You’ll find that in the rock world it is quite common for trade names not to be geologically accurate. Marble is a common one, as are trade names ending in jasper, onyx….
