These are the photos mentioned in my thread talking about the fancy weatherproofing for my camera. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/95988/high-tech-water-protection-cameraFor the last few days of our recent vacation we decided to do some things in our general area that we never seem to get around to. We spent one of the days in Niagara Falls, less than a half hour drive for us. We decided to spend the day and do a couple of the tours that are offered. First up was The Cave of the Winds. This is a picture of a good chunk of the structure. Designed to get you up close and personal to the Falls, this structure is built by Memorial Day each year and taken down before each winter to avoid ice damage. Some mini-falls. Getting started, relatively dry. Getting a little wet. A pic of the upstream rapids. Next up was a ride on the Maid of the Mist. Another way to get an up close experience, takes you inside the Horseshoe Falls where 90% of the flow falls. Luckily timing worked out perfectly and our boat only had about half this many people. The calm before the storm. The observation tower. Entering the Horseshoe Falls. Seeing that I put a photo of inside the Falls in the aforementioned thread, here is a wet video. Pretty wild experience. A view from the observation tower. Went into the city to get a bite to eat and came back to see the Falls illuminated. If you are planning a visit to the area and need any recommendations on where to stay/eat, what to do, etc. let me know. It is nice when the border is open and you can see the view from both the American and Canadian sides. There is more to do on the Canadian side especially if you are into the touristy thing. The city on the American side gets sketchy really fast if you do not know where you are going, best to be aware and use your smarts.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. Cool place to see in the winter as well, obviously no tours but seeing everything around the rushing water covered in ice is quite a site.

Nice trip report and photos.
I took my son for the weekend a couple of years ago. Lots of fun. From river level the falls are beyond description. We did the helicopter ride over the falls and had the front seats, really cool. When we got home I asked him what was the best part of the trip. Without hesitation he said the side trip to Robert Hall's Rock Shop. I believe there are some interesting rockhounding opportunities on the Canadian side as well. Check out MeMiner on youtube.

Thanks Bill. Robert Hall's is on my list if/when the border opens up. Greig gave me a few tips on spots to check out in Ontario a while back. Lots of interesting geology on this side of the border, just not much that is useful for lapidary.

I’d sure like to check out the terroir of that finger lakes area lol Where I am (basically in between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY) would be considered the "Niagara Region" by those who make the distinctions, not too far from the Finger Lakes. Wine has become big business in the Niagara Region and many of the wineries now have tastings, tours, etc. Or you can take a tour including many wineries if you really want to feel good.

Were I am (basically in between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY) would be considered the "Niagara Region" by those who make the distinctions, not to far from the Finger Lakes. Wine has become big business in the Niagara Region and many of the wineries now have tastings, tours, etc. Or you can take a tour including many wineries if you really want to feel good. That’s interesting. I hope the big business is an overall positive for you and your neighbors, the worst part of seeing big business takeover is watching the profits end up in the hands of people who don’t live in the area. I should clarify in that most of the vineyards and wineries are owned by locals, in many cases have been for multiple generations. There has been a trend with a lot of them, and many of the apple orchards here as well, to expand their offerings to add revenue streams. Most have stores where they not only offer their own wines but other local goods as well, some with full scale restaurants. We've been going apple picking at one place for the last 30 plus years. Used to be we would see a handful of other folks. As time went on their traffic certainly increased and eventually they had to clear some of their land for parking and even then you may be on the road. Not uncommon in these operations for the kids to go off to school for business and come back home to modernize the operation. I'd be lying if I were to say I didn't miss the quiet of the old days but I am glad to see these places survive and not be taken over by a huge corporate farming operation.

I know you understand that us folks out here just do not get to see lapidary machinery in action too often. I'll PM you in a few weeks when everything settles down with the back to school stuff, etc.
