Very cool to find core samples laying around. They look like granite to me.

I’ve always liked core samples, and have a few. It’s neat to drill into a rock deep in the earth and pull out a nice round piece. Some day, I want to slice some and incorporate them in jewelry. Even when they are fairly plain, they are interesting. Thanks!

I too have a few core samples. Very strange to just find them laying around. I agree that they could be sliced for pendants.

These were either les fractured or the ones I liked best. This is my second time up there; the first time I grabbed a couple too. I took a picture of the pile first time up there. I’ll see if I still have it.

Crud no pic. Not sure why I would have deleted it. They were purposely piled up there next to the road, below the dumps but above the foundations for the old mine buildings/works.

I remember the first time I saw a core sample. I had NO clue what it was and thought it was weird that someone would have smooth cylindrical rocks for no apparent reason. LOL

I think you've inspired me to grab some core samples I found in an old timers collection, quartzilla. I have picked through his collection a couple of times and put the core samples down, there's lots of cool stuff there, but next time I'm gonna keep them in my flat and take em home. A bowl full of shiny discs sounds cool to me. At $1-2/lb, there's not much there that's not worth taking.

Anybody curious to see this location? It’s actually in the background in the first Fast And Furious movie. Remember the long scene at the end where they parked by the water tank and tried to hijack the truck? You actually pass the water tank on the way up there. This is the long shot when they are driving the little access road up to the tank; the next part where they are parked next to it and out of the vehicles and the lighting is blue/green I believe is a set. During the whole hijack scene where the guy is on the hood getting shot at you can sometimes see a large “V” notch on top of the mountain in the background and the lighter colored cone shaped dump leading downwards from it. That’s the place! Lol whenever I watch this movie I’m looking at the mountain in the background the whole time!

As a Geologist I have drilled and logged 1000's of feet core. Anything of interest is packed out and sent to the lab for assay but the rest is boxed and left at the site as it just to heavy to deal with and has no value. Looks cool when cut at 45 degrees.

That was actually the idea I had with these: a nice straight cut at the bottom so they stand up plumb and then a 45’ at the other end with a polish ( if possible ) to display them. I’m just a tumbler but I do have a tile saw. I don’t think my saw is big enough to do the 45’ cut though 😕

Best core! DeGrussa copper mine in western Australia discovery hole. 200+ feet of visible copper and gold. Not one of my projects but the driller and mine geologist are friends of mine. I have also drilled and logged a lot of banded iron formation and tiger iron but was unable to keep any of it. Best location 50 feet from the beach drilling cores of basalt & coral reef material for the foundation study for the Maui Prince Hotel. The problem is the good stuff is what you are looking for and is saved by the company or sent to assay. I have seen some great gold in quartz veins but it is not like you can just put it in your personal collection.

I will do the same if I can get mine cut how I described above.
