Don’t want to jinx myself, but looking for advice.
Have a regular customer at my day job and someone who has become a friend.
Over the past year she had the tough task of dealing with her Mom, who has dementia.
I would often give her advice when she got a call from Mom when I was with her.
Or, when she received a call from Mom at another time.
My specialty, when working in Human Services, was Dementia.
About 6 months ago, the tough choice was made to move Mom into a care facility.
Mom and Dad were avid rock collectors. They traveled the country.
Mom also made lots of jewelry.
My friend knows a little about rocks, as she went to some shows with her Mom/Dad.
She just does not know values. Does know the difference between granite, copper ore, petrified wood, and many others.
Over the past several months, she has told me about what she found in her Mom’s house. The house is located about 2 hours from her home, so she goes there a couple times per month. Tries to see her Mom at the same time.
She was excited to see me at work a couple days ago. Said she was cleaning up the landscaping and found many “good rocks”. Found some more in a basement room she had not been into yet.
So far, there are several, standard size totes filled with jewelry supplies. These include glass beads, plastic beads, strands of rock/shell/wood beads, jewelry findings, carved fetishes and cabochon mountings.
A few tackle boxes filled with rocks.
The older ones are identified by name and sometimes location found. The more recent ones are labeled by color or not labeled.
As the dementia progressed, her Mom was collecting local rocks based on colors.
Some slabs.
Rough rocks.
A container labeled copper.
A container labeled petrified wood.
A container labeled from Oregon.
A container labeled from Montana.
A container labeled from Colorado.
A container labeled as from Arizona.
Another container with sliced, round rocks. The outside of the rocks did not look like much. The insides had beautiful patterns and some crystals. Told her these were probably geodes or thundereggs.
She let me know that most of the items in the containers were beautiful.
The containers are all about half, standard tote size.
A fairly large tackle box labeled preforms and cabochons. She did not open this, as she had no clue. I showed her some pre-forms and cabochons. She will open it on her next trip there.
My friend said she could fill the back of her truck with everything. We could meet up for me to purchase some items and give approximate values for the rest.
I like a good deal, but want to give my friend a fair value. She just wants to get rid of everything.
She needs to finish cleaning out and to sell the house. Do basic landscape improvements. She volunteers with some gardening/plant groups, so knows what needs to be done with that.
Her and her husband are not lacking $. They have many collections and live comfortably. Have many investments. Are retired and in their 60’s.
She is not interested in starting another collection, but wants to keep one of the large, Amethyst crystal formations she found. Yes, there are many crystal formations of various colors, some things that look like shells in rocks, petrified shells and other things.
I want to be fair with my friend for the items I purchase from her.
Give her fair value for items I do not purchase.
Any advice? Thank you.
