I am in need of suggestions.
Have been selling some rocks via a Facebook selling page for agates.
First ones I sold were shipped via boxes I made from used SFRB’s. No problem. Postal worker said she loved how I was repurposing the boxes. At the time, I was also sending put a box of slabs. The postal worker knew about my jewelry business. She suggested I take some priority mail boxes, as they would be cheaper to mail items in. Cost would be $4.85 for light items.
I took some of those.
Packaged the next shipments of agates in them. There were 1-3, small agates in each package. Total weight of between less than 1 oz. to 4 oz. I added fill paper and bubble wrap.
When I tried to send, was told by a different postal worker the cost would be over $8.00, for priority mail!
The standard for shipping costs is $5.00 maximum for the agate sales page. Did not ship them.
I covered everything indicating that it was a priority mail box and went to PO again.
The same postal worker was there as last time. She said the charge would be over $8.00, as I had used a priority mail box. Told me to get some plain, brown boxes to ship items in. She reminded me of the size the boxes had to be, which is much larger than needed. I think the minimum size was around 5.5” x 3.5” x 1.75.
I have some on order.
A customer threatened to report me for not shipping her rock. I made a box again from a used SFRB. Cut it down a little to meet minimum size. Covered it in white paper. Postal worker said I would be charged for a SFRB. That USPS boxes could not be modified for re-use.
I was paid $3.00 for the polished agate slices, plus $5.00 shipping at a Facebook auction page.
Was wondering what you ship items that are fragile in or are too large to meet USPS requirements for using a padded envelope?
The agates I need to ship are either over 2” thick or smaller slices that could easily be broken in shipment if a padded envelope was used.
Some of the agates were sold at auction for less than $10.00, including shipping.
I am not listing any more agates for sale at this time, as I learned my lesson.
Thank you for any input on how to ship individual or small groups of agates.
I also need to ship some cabs/jewelry that I do not want to put in padded mailers
