A few months ago I decided to start making necklaces/pendants out of my finds and then this fella came out of nowhere and I decided this is my everyday stone, but I have no idea what it is. I assume some sort of fossil because of the indentation, but I have no idea. Haven't found any others like it. Working on a better picture. 20210919_213726 by wbsc56, on Flickr

I can't see the photo. The link won't work. If you right click and open in new tab it should work, I fumbled trying to set up my image sharing profile....try to tackle that again tonight.

Nice looking rock. Did you etch it? Looks soft, maybe basalt.

Cool thanks for doing that, I figured out how to upload from flickr and adjust the sizing now....much to learn.

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! I wish I could help you on the ID part...but I'll agree with others, whatever it is, it's really cool looking! (Great job on figuring out the pic posting as quickly as you did!)

Looks like chocolate to me 🍩. I like the idea of an everyday pendant.

Jet?

That looks highly probable. If it is jet, rubbing with a cloth it should produce a static charge (silk, wool or fur work best). Where was it found?

I found it on the shore of southern Lake Michigan, I will try and test it. It has what I would call a slightly waxy texture to it but maybe that's the oil from my skin from wearing it so long.

Hmm… could be. If there is build-up, it might interfere with the “triboelectric effect,” but I’m not at all sure about that. It just seems like a layer of oils would be electrically insulating
Jet is also relatively light, so it sinks more slowly than most rocks, and is not cool to the touch.

Don't be too offended if he proposes sticking a hot needle into it to see what it smells like. In my experience, a lot of geologists are not opposed to destructive testing.

So I finally caught up with the owner of the rock shop near me who is a geologist. He said, just by looking at it (no poking at it with a stick stephan ), that it looked to be an iron concretion or possibly some kind of iron rich, sedimentary concretion. I guess it's plausible, but it doesn't seem to match anything I'm finding online Something like these are close but in my opinion not the same However, it got me thinking about another stone I found which is kind of a conglomerate of iron concretion and a septarian here....

Is it heavy for its size? I figured you would have mentioned it if it were. Most iron concretions would be on the heavier side. The picture of it looks like it’s lighter to me. I don’t know why… just a feeling I get.
That latest one looks cool.

I'm going to figure this one out eventually .
The backside of the new one is all of the lighter material. It's a wonky stone.

Streak should help a lot in id. I'm guessing that jet will leave a black streak, much like a lead pencil. It certainly stains the water black on a cab machine. Hematite or Limonite would give a red or light brownish streak. Jet is soft and might be scratched (on the back please) with knife blade. This looks to have been carved by human hands. The grooves look to sharp to be nature formed. I'm assuming it did not come out of the lake with a hole. One way out speculation to consider is that it is a very hard seed. It has a biological look in a strange sort of way. Keep us informed.
